About Nia
ABOUT ME
I qualified as a veterinary surgeon in the summer of 2018, and decided to take a slightly different route.
As it turned out, my veterinary training had prepared me remarkably well for the job of teaching science! My background gave me a unique angle from which to approach scientific topics with students, and I continue to work hard behind the scenes to develop my skills as a teacher.
I wanted to become a vet because I love animals, and most of all, I am fascinated by the science behind how living things work, how and why they go wrong, and what we can do to fix them. During the many years that I've studied science, both at school and during my degree, I've experienced a huge variety of different teaching styles, many of which just did not work for me. I know how it feels to really struggle to understand a concept, and I’ve come up with many of my own learning techniques that have helped me through a very intense five years of veterinary training and exams.
TUTORIALS WITH A DIFFERENCE
I aim for my sessions to be interactive, interesting, and a bit different.
My aim is to help you to make connections for yourself, and introduce you to some evidence-based study techniques that are really effective, to help you study less, but better.
The key is using your study time wisely, so that you can still do the things you enjoy outside of school.
Taking care of yourself is such an important part of performing well academically, so making your study time work for you is crucial in maintaining that healthy balance.
EXPERIENCE
I have delivered well over 140 tutorials to secondary students of all abilities, in preparation for their GCSE, A Level, and Scottish National/Higher/Advanced Higher exams . Alongside my role as a private tutor, I continue to work within a government-funded scheme which provides underprivileged students in hundreds of schools across the UK with free online tuition during their school day, who would otherwise be unable to afford private tuition.

COST OF TUITION
I love my work, and I really believe in making tuition as affordable as possible, so that as many students as possible can benefit.
There has been a tendency towards tutors charging extortionate hourly rates, which I feel is only widening the attainment gap between students.
We live in a society that affords every opportunity to those with the financial means to pay their way through, and not to those who really need that extra help.
Could I charge more for the time I dedicate to each of my students? absolutely.
But, I charge what I believe is fair for the time I put into planning and teaching my students, and what I believe is reasonable for the majority of families to be able to afford.
APPLYING TO VET SCHOOL?
I can offer you feedback and advice on any aspect of your vet school application, including work experience, personal statements, UCAS applications, and interviews. I submitted three UCAS applications (and endured many interviews) before I was finally offered a place at vet school as a mature student; I’ve experienced all of the ups and downs! and can provide an inside perspective on the veterinary profession as it currently stands.
