About Michelle

I attended Oundle School with a General Scholarship and then went on to study English at the University of Birmingham. After graduating with a 2.1, I went on to complete a BA in Acting at one of the top Drama Schools in London, Mountview Academy. It was in my final year of my acting BA that I started tutoring and fell in love with it.

With 10 years of experience, having taught up to 10 students a week, I pride myself on being a great private tutor due to my dedication, enthusiasm and experience. I am animated, upbeat and sensitive to each student’s needs and my acting background helps me approach things in new, creative ways when necessary. I am able to combine different skills depending on what each student needs from me and always aim to facilitate their education by teaching them to use the tools they need. I always encourage a certain level of autonomy and whenever possible allow my students to choose the topics and skills they wish to work on. I have worked with students to help them achieve higher grades at GCSE, gain entrance to their desired schools and colleges, I have supported students’ studies through times with they are faced with personal challenges, PhD students looking for help with grammar and essay structure, provided acting coaching for students preparing for drama school auditions and I continue to find out new reasons people need and want tuition. I have excellent references and am yet to find someone I haven’t been able to help.

I am so passionate about tutoring. With 10 years experience, my teaching methods change depending on what each student might need. I cover different topics in lots of different ways to ensure each student fully understands what we are doing and is able to do it autonomously. Plus, I do try to make sure it’s as enjoyable as possible! I am a relaxed and positive person and I love helping people achieve their full potential.

GCSE English Lit and Lang is my speciality. Different exam boards require different approaches so I work with lots of past papers and aim to identify weaker skills in relation to what is necessary for each different paper.

Areas covered:
-Skills for identifying language techniques
-Close analysis practise for fiction and non-fiction texts
-Structure analysis skills
-Writing technique - fiction and non-fiction
-Literature set texts study (Shakespeare, 19th literature, modern texts and poetry), including coverage of general understanding, study of major themes, characters and close analysis practice.
-Essay technique
-Grammar skills
-Text summary and synthesis skills
-Practice papers
-Confidence building

For 11+ students, most often there is an element of low confidence alongside one or two areas that need more focus than the rest. It is often a case of identifying which areas these are and addressing them, and then the rest usually falls into place.

Areas covered:
-Comprehension, grammar, reading and writing practice
-Verbal and Non Verbal reasoning practice papers
-Spelling, pronunciation and vocabulary work
-Variety of games and exercises to learn and practice skills
-Comprehension, grammar, reading and writing practice
-Practice papers
-Confidence building exercises and games
-Regular meetings with parents to discuss progress, targets and any concerns
-Strengths and weaknesses identified alongside areas needing further reinforcement

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I started out as a homework helper in my final year of uni and I loved it straight away. As I gained more experience, and started to get booked up, I decided to narrow down the subjects I offered and went on to specialise in GCSE. This was were I felt I was doing my best teaching and had the most to offer. I still love it as much as I did when I first started, and now I'm even better at it!
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I love all aspects of the English and Drama syllabuses. They all have their own challenges and different students enjoy or struggle with different elements of them. Shakespeare is an area that I love to help my students demystify and hopefully enjoy the challenge of. I also love exploring how to analyse different texts and how best to convey these discoveries clearly and concisely in writing. Finally, creative writing is also really fun to teach. Surprisingly, or perhaps not, quite a few students find this aspect of English particularly challenging and unenjoyable so it feels great to help them hone skills and practice to help turn it around for them.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

I am inspired by so many people around me. In particular, a teacher of mine who I am still in touch with. She has always been incredibly careful to remember that each student she teaches is an individual with different needs and different interests. She taught me that there is no 'one way' to do something. The joy of one-to-one tuition is that I have the ability and freedom to investigate what each student needs and adapt accordingly. Another thing she has taught me it that it doesn't matter how many times you need to go over something, it's always worth the time and patience when it finally clicks.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

I think a good tutor combines clarity, empathy and patience with a healthy dollop of fun.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

When I was at school I really struggled with Maths. I was lucky enough to be offered tutoring and that particular tutor turned everything around for me. Her name was Jo. She was fun, patient and totally empathetic about the fact that, sometimes, I simply couldn't get my head around a particular equation or problem. The most important thing I remember about our sessions was that she never made me feel stupid or like I wasn't good enough. She empathised and always made comments like, "You're right, it is hard. Let's try it another way." This was so encouraging and helped build my confidence at the same time as my determination to get my head around whatever it was we were working on. I loved my sessions with Jo. I can't say I ended up totally loving Maths, but she definitely got me much closer.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

I find that I often need to read things more than once, and not rush, which can be tempting! If there is a lot of distraction around I find it hard to concentrate so often pop my headphones in and play soundscapes like rain or white noise to help. I remember finding my peers' reading speeds and comprehension incredibly daunting when I was at school but in time I learnt that I was able to produce work that was just as good, if not better. I just needed to give myself more time and space to do it.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I love teaching because I get to interact with all kinds of people and no two people are the same. It's fun. It's challenging. And it's incredibly rewarding. I also just really love words. And I love trying to make my students fall in love with words too. Words can be carefully crafted, ordered and reordered, repeated and combined to create so many different experiences for a reader. They can be chosen in such a way that they entertain, scold, educate, scare, move, instruct and so much more. The way different writers can portray such variety in their style is really quite incredible.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

Having done this for over 10 years, I have a huge amount of experience and my passion for teaching is still very much alive. I'm reliable, intelligent, hardworking and positive. I believe no one ever stops learning, and we all have something to offer each other. I believe that confidence is one of the most important things to nurture and build when it comes to learning or tackling something that might feel hard or even impossible. And I'm great at building my student's confidence. I get such pleasure and satisfaction when I am able to help and encourage someone to reach their full potential.
