About Michaela

In 2015 I graduated from the University of Sheffield with a first class Masters degree in Chemistry. After finishing university I gained a place on the NHS Scientist Training Programme, specialising in clinical biochemistry at Southampton General Hospital whilst completing a Masters degree in Clinical Biochemistry at the University of Manchester. I have since worked as a senior clinical biochemist at the Reference Biochemistry department at King’s College Hospital and am registered with the Health and Care Professions Council.

Through my academic ventures I have conducted numerous scientific research projects, including a masters project in physical organic chemistry for which I studied the intramolecular catalysis of cyclic phosphate triester hydrolysis. This entailed organic synthesis and isolation of highly reactive cyclic phosphate triesters in order to define a mechanism that explains the enhancement of hydrolysis rate. During my undergraduate studies I undertook a six week laboratory research project involving the synthesis of coiled coil proteins as additives for magnetite precipitation reactions in order to regulate magnetic nanoparticle formation for potential medical applications. This led to publication of a scientific research article, 'Artificial coiled coil biomineralisation protein for the synthesis of magnetic nanoparticles’, published in Nature Communications.

I am very approachable, outgoing, driven, and enthusiastic. My pedagogical strengths lie in the simplification of complex scientific theories and making them accessible to all. I empathise with the difficulties that accompany learning and understanding such constructs and strive to make this process as easy as possible for my tutees. My proficient, organised and goal oriented disposition translates constructively in my tutoring approach. Building a safe and interactive space for my tutees is of the utmost importance. My priority is working together with students to identify crucial knowledge gaps in order to realise academic potential and achieve practical learning targets.

I have a range of experience (100+ hours) tutoring science to students of all ages, from GCSE to undergraduate degree level. My areas of speciality are Chemistry (GCSE, A Level, BSc), English Language (GCSE, A Level), GCSE Science (single, double, and triple awards). I am well practised in OCR, AQA and Edexcel Chemistry A Level syllabuses.
