About Michael
Hello , i would like to say i am very happy to take on any students of any age from 7 to 87 !! I have many years experience teaching Primary School guitar groups and the same with Secondary School students and i am used to going through course work and theory to back it up . I have taught OAP groups and if i can help anyone get close to a dream they might have about playing i am really happy to help . I started taking Jazz guitar lessons with a brilliant man called Cedric West in 1984. Through these lessons I got to grips with the Jazz standard repertoire and started gigging with Cedric. A year later I read a Guitar Player magazine article on Jaco Pastorius and got heavily into his music to the point of imitation. In 1992 I started jamming with musicians like Simon Purcell and guitarist Phil Robson and through these jams got a place on the Guildhall School of music Jazz course on which Simon was a teacher . I then started gigging professionally on Bass guitar and Double bass. While at the Guildhall I studied Jazz double bass with Jeff Clyne. The piano has been a great help with finding harmony and these concepts I transferred to the guitar .During the 1990s I played on many recordings on the guitar and now years later I am looking back to my lessons with Cedric West and am now gigging on the guitar . I have a gig coming up playing the music of Herbie Hancock on acoustic guitar with a quartet . If you are interested in the Jazz guitar styles of George Benson or Kenny Burrell or Joe pass I might be able to help . We jammed with Joe Pass once a Cedrics house back in 1990! Other teachers I have studied with are on guitar Dave Cliff and on Bass guitar Dill Katz and at two Bass nature camps in 2003 and 2005 with Victor Wooten and Steve Bailey . At the 2003 camp I won a scholarship to the Bass collective in NewYork and took Bass lessons there for two weeks also checking out the NY jazz scene . On the pop side I have always loved the music of Elton John and David Bowie and The Who and gig and teach their songs . While I am by no means Eddie Van Halen I would say I am a good decent Rock guitarist in the classic sense . ON THE BASS GUITAR IF YOUR INTERESTED IN THE STYLES OF STANLEY CLARKE OR MARCUS MILLER OR the upright bass jazz styles of Ron Carter or Ray Brown maybe i can help . Its been since the early 1980s that i started learning about all this music and now its time to pass it on to another generation i hope . That could be an older one or younger one . I dont mind which and I hope it’s both .

I have personally known Mike for a good few years from when I became his bass student.
I can personally attest to his very high level of musicianship, clear and thoughtful explanations of the method required to become a good and rounded professional, and of course, his very patient and easy-going manner with which he imparts his experience through to the student.
He is a great teacher,a great musician and a great chap!
Anyone who takes the time to study with him will be very happy with his professional and informal manner.Michael is a superb teacher and peerless musician. I have had the pleasure of learning to play jazz guitar, facilitated by Michael's learned and patient approach.
I would recommend him with impugnity; he is highly qualified as a musician and as teacher he gives to his students a boundless and fresh enthusiasm, whatever the challenges they may have, as in my case with my right hand technique. Please contact me if you need to know moreView more recommendations
