About Matthew
I have been working for the past few years as a Teaching Assistant and
Learning Mentor in both mainstream and special needs schools.
In my last school I worked on a one-to-one basis with a year 5 student who is
on the Autistic spectrum. I had to plan (in accordance with what topics the
class teacher asked me to cover and deliver English and mathematics
lessons.
I like to vary how my lessons are delivered, for example, if one lesson
involves a lot of written work, the next lesson will be practical. I found this
especially useful when teaching mathematics. Using numicon blocks, for
example, to work out a sum, such as 2+2=4, the student can visualise what
can be a fairly abstract problem. I would also include plenty of physical
activities. In the playground there was a large Snakes & Ladders game
painted on the floor and I used this to play counting games which the children really enjoyed. I find that if you make lessons fun, you make them memorable. When a child is fascinated and excited by a topic you are discussing, the adrenaline rush you get is incomparable.
Another part of my role was to lead guided reading and grammar sessions
with small groups (I was permitted to lead a whole class grammar revision
session once a week). The subjects I taught during these grammar sessions
were prescribed by the class teacher – subordinating clauses and
conjunctions, main clauses and conjunctions, apostrophes, relative clause,
different types of noun, punctuating speech, etc.
I have a passion for teaching and developing the minds of future generations and I particularly enjoy working with children with special needs. When you realise you have made a breakthrough and the child is making progress it is so rewarding.
