About Matthew
After success in my undergraduate degree, including an award for medieval studies, I decided to continue to pursue academia. I believe that a student’s interest in a topic is the greatest factor in their learning: curiosity is the driving force behind all academia, particularly the humanities and arts.
Engagement is the primary goal. It is all too easy for students to see texts as another piece of information to absorb, when in fact art exists to be questioned. I see my role as encouraging students to ask questions and develop their own views, while also providing support for their academic improvement. A bored pupil will rarely improve, however talented they might be, while even the most struggling student can greatly improve their grades when their passion for the subject is inflamed.
To that end, I aim to provide warm, engaging tutoring, focussing on interpretation and hopefully enjoyment. I don’t believe in worksheets or repetition, rather discussion, experimentation, and personal expression.

Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the teacher
I have known Matthew since September 2013, first as his undergraduate lecturer for several modules on medieval literature, and then as the director of the MA in Medieval Studies, which Matthew completed during 2016/17. Matthew was an exemplary student: intelligent and engaged, articulate in both spoken and written expression, and hard working. In my view, Matthew would make an excellent tutor: he is patient and generous, extremely capable intellectually, and well mannered and likeable.
