I am a recent graduate of Oxford University where I received a First Class degree in English Language and Literature that was in the top 5 overall in the university. I have experience tutoring a range of ages and abilities, from 13 to 17 in subjects as wide ranging as GCSE Chemistry to A-Level History.
My approach to students begins with establishing a friendly rapport so that they feel comfortable and I am able to find out how best they learn in order to tailor lessons accordingly. Encouraging independent and creative thinking without fear of making mistakes is the foundation of understanding and is necessary for anyone who wants to improve, no matter the subject.
Once a student's strengths and weaknesses are established I focus on a plan to shore up the former and eliminate the latter. I am not afraid to go beyond the syllabus, which tutees often find stimulating and rewarding, in order to help the student gain a deeper understanding of the subject at hand.
Mathis was always very positive and encouraging with the tutoring of my daughter. He was very thorough in going over her work with her, explaining everything calmly and questioning her to make sure she fully understood. As a result she not only gained confidence but her grades improved too.
