Touch-typing, Dyslexia Support & English Teacher

I am a gentle tutor, a qualified primary school teacher and an organized, inspirational tutor of English Literature and Language for all levels who understands the need for individualised instruction within established teaching methods.

When I was taking my degree, I opted to take a module that concentrated on how to teach pupils with dyslexia. In real-world teaching, I was able to employ my skills to help children and teenagers with dyslexia to become better readers and writers.

I believe in the mastery of fundamentals before all else. Let me furnish this with an example: I would tutor the pupil to master basic grammar before teaching advanced grammar.

I have experience of teaching English Literature AS and A2 to British students. I am a precise grammarian, but very compassionate in my approach to teaching it because I am conscious of preserving the pupil’s confidence while empowering them to learn the intricacies of the English language so they may enjoy as much academic success as possible.

I am forensic about spelling, and enthusiast for well-structured, expressive writing. That said I believe in encouraging the pupil warmly while they learn how to spell and become more fluent writers.

When I was 18 I started training to be a primary school by teaching in primary schools around a busy city in Ireland. When I would give a lesson to children I would be supervised by one of my professors who would assign me a mark for my performance. My final mark for my teaching performance was a First.

For over a decade, in tandem with my teaching career, I have simultaneously worked as a professional writer in both print and television, and have published my own novel entitled Love for Beginners. I have edited the professional writing of others. In short, I have hard-won real world experience to impart to my students.

My day-to-day hard graft as a writer cemented my commitment to clear and impactful writing. I specialise in making troubled writers competent and good writers great. I am very patient with those who are finding great difficulty with written expression, but also very encouraging and motivating.

There are intangibles at the higher levels of language arts which require something more than the application of rote rules and practices. I am here to help you achieve your goals in the language arts, whatever they may be. If you want better marks, or the best marks in exams, that's fine. If you want to become the best writer you are capable of becoming, it would be my joy to help you get there.

A truly remarkable English tutor

Mary tutored me in an advanced course in structure, diction and syntax. I am a skilled, educated writer, with a long background in technical writing.

However, I had a compelling non-fiction book-length work to complete and, having never written anything like that, turned to Mary for assistance.

She was very patient with me, but pointed out ways in which the flow of my narrative could be improved by helping me order sections of my work, and making certain stylistic choices that I would have never otherwise known of.

I depended on Mary’s ability to take what I had done and teach me how to shape it into a coherent story, with a proper beginning, middle and end. Along the way, she helped me use more interesting language and avoid redundancies and irrelevancies.

She taught me about foreshadowing, so that events that happened later in the narrative were properly set up with preceding hints for the reader.

I wanted to learn more about the craft of writing, as well as get my story told in an elegant way, and thus I received an enormous amount of tutoring from this very skilled writing teacher. Mary has a broad knowledge of English literature, and has many reference points from which to draw, having also taught grammar and English language to non-English speakers. Whatever your need in linguistics or English, I highly recommend Mary O'Regan as a tutor.
