About MARTIN

PERSONAL STATEMENT

Appropriate academic and teaching qualifications:

For the academic year 2017/2018, I have been studying for a Masters Degree in Business and Management which is due to end on the 16th of September 2018. During this period, I attended some CPD training on equality and diversity, Behaviour for learning, UK Government Prevent strategy, supply teaching techniques, and Safeguard Training. I hold a PGCE certificate in Business studies and maths at level 2, with an outstanding result issued by The Institute of Education (IOE), University of London. Before my training to become a practitioner, I achieved a BA (HONS) in Business and Management with a 2:1 grade. Finally, I have an HND in Business and Finance level 5 where I obtained merit.

The Recent experience of teaching:

In March 2018 I did a successful 6 minutes micro teach presentation to a group of 13 students on the shared resource and capabilities of a given company. Furthermore, on the 31st of July 2018, I presented 6 minutes talk on my personal and professional progression through the aspect of negotiation. I have acquired vast experience in teaching and learning in the past academic year 2016/2017. During this period, I underwent a teacher training course at the Institute of Education University College London and a teaching placement at New City College (NCC) in Hackney. Furthermore, I acquired experience from presenting five micro-teach lessons of about 15minutes each on my subject specialism at the (IOE). My experience relates to teaching at BTEC Extended Diploma Level 2, BTEC 90 credit Level 3 and BTEC Subsidiary Diploma Level 3. The topics involved include; Business Accounting and Finance, Business Resources, Creative Product Promotion, Developing Teams that work well and Marketing. The Pearson’s Examination Board examines all these units.

Experience in curriculum planning and assessment:

I designed a seven months scheme of work (SOW) on developing teams in business at BTEC 90 credit level 2 during my practice at NCC. The SOW was in line with the curriculum design set by the institution. Also, at the IOE, I designed six weeks two hours a week curriculum on better Notes-Taking Skills drawing from my experience in the classroom at NCC. My curriculum design included an excellent assessment for learning techniques such as self-assessing, peer assessment and questions and answers. I was awarded a passing grade for the curriculum planning project.

Experience of working with 16-19-year-olds:

For nine months during the academic year 2016/2017, I worked with 16-19-year-old learners. During this period I understood the curriculum and pastoral needs of this age group. During my practice, I devoted most of my time to supporting learners in class and during tutorials. On some occasions, I communicated with learners by phone to ask them why they are either late or absent from class. Also, I inform learners’ parents to arrange meetings with them and the learners regarding the learners' achievements. From this approach, some learners became highly motivated and started engaging in class. The feedback I got from them was that they were delighted that a teacher cared about them and their well being regarding their education.

Subject knowledge and awareness:

I have strong subject knowledge and awareness of current 14-19 curriculum developments concerning teaching business studies and functional skills in Maths. As a holder of a PGCE in business studies with an outstanding award, a BA (Hons) in Business and Management at 2:1 and an HND in Business and Finance at level 5, I am well placed to teach Business studies at secondary and Further Education level. In practice, excellent communication skills have boosted my confidence in the delivery of my subject content. I have observed three ICT teachers whose lesson laid more emphasis on the use of a spreadsheet. The topic is essential in enhancing the delivery of the business accounting unit and other units that require the use of formulas on computers. For 10years I was a self-employed businessman specialising in export and delivery and logistics services. My academic and industrial experience put me in a better position to teach Business Studies to the 16-19 year-olds over other applicants.

Understanding of and commitment to Equal Opportunities:

I can show a good knowledge of and commitment to the college’s policies to equal opportunities in the classroom. In other to promote equal opportunity for learners, my institution had posters in each class spelling out how equality, diversity and respect are taken very seriously. To enhance this, I ensured an inclusive learning environment where every learner had access to the interactive whiteboard. The desks are usually arranged in a horseshoe format to provide the teacher with easy access to learners needing support. Also, I made sure that the tasks in my lesson plans include business scenarios that involve individual females in class as business owners. In this case, the female named in the situation is at the centre of the discussions on the task. Most women are always interested and engaged in these tasks.

Ability to make the subject interesting:

During my training, I studied and passed five weeks online course on blended learning. The reason was to improve my ability to make the delivery of my subject interesting by mixing the traditional face-to-face teaching and learning methods with online digital teaching and learning techniques. Focusing on most of my daily practice, I began implementing the flipped learning and audacity methods in the classroom, and it positively changed the phase of learners’ classroom behaviour. Another example is that I give learners the opportunity to research topics at home before the actual lesson. During the day's lesson, I allow learners to lead the session. The lesson flows like an open discussion where learners express their findings, and we discuss it following the lesson plan. Peer feedback becomes paramount in the process. From this method, I have realised that learners are always engaged, participative and interested in the sessions as they have pre-knowledge of the topic.

Ability to communicate and work effectively:

I can teach and work effectively with staff across the department at all levels. For example, during the early days of my practice, an adverse critical incident took place where some learners came late, and some were disruptive and continued talking in small groups or using their phones. I reflected-on-action and communicated my mentor and head of the business studies department about the problem. At a meeting with them, I was advised to prepare a flipped chart with the topic exposed in front of the class for learners to see. There should also be a workshop on the subject to keep learners busy as they enter the class while I prepare myself for the lesson. In this way, subsequent latecomers will fit with the severe and quiet class. I implemented this strategy in my future practice, and it improves classroom behaviour and participation.

The ability to relate to and communicate effectively:

During my practice, I developed the ability to connect to, communicate effectively with and counsel learners and monitor their progress. My excellent communication skills have boosted my confidence in the delivery of my subject content. Besides, I have necessary IT skill that includes; excel word processing and typing. My calm and assertive approach to managing learners including my soft skills is valuable assets to interaction with 16-19-year-olds. At the end of my lessons, learners fill exit passes, and most of them always conclude that I have a strong voice projection which is a skill required to command my class. In practice, some learners in NCC nominated me as the teacher of the year due to my constant advice on the importance of education to their future lives. Besides, my learners say that my teaching styles are detailed, simplistic and understanding and I always ensure that they progress in their course by providing constant support.

Effective planning, administrative and organisational skills

I possess effective planning, administrative and regulatory skills which are vital in meeting deadlines. I have excellent time management skills which meet targets in lesson delivery, learners’ assignments and long-term goals of my course. To enhance short and long-term planning, I am capable of producing clear and focused schemes of work (SOW) and lesson plans. I am very passionate about my subject specialism, an approach that I combine with pastoral care to motivate and encourage learners to attend and engage in my lessons. I enjoy passing over some of my leadership skills to my learners by giving them leadership roles during the delivery of most of my business studies sessions. I have proven my ability in these skills by focusing on SOW and lesson plans. In practice, my mentor was impressed as I was able to follow my SOW and lesson plan strictly. As a result, I completed my units on time and made sure that learners met all their deadlines for submission of their course works.
