About Martha
I am a professional tutor with over 10 years experience teaching students from the age of 7 to 24, specialising in English, History of Art, Philosophy and Ethics. I have assisted in writing university dissertations and A Level essays helping students to achieve their highest goals and achievements . I began tutoring while studying at Westminster School helping students with their 11+/16+ applications to prestigious schools across the UK. This led to tutoring some of those very same ambitious students reaching their goal of studying at Oxbridge.
I have also taught as a teacher’s assistant at Dulwich College Preparatory school, primarily with Years 3 and 4. Working with students of all capabilities means understanding that varying educational methods for each individual pupil is essential. However, what I aim to instil in all of my students is a passion and curiosity that is introduced through their academic pursuits and which they will take with them into all their areas of interest. I would love to help you or your child, in reaching their highest academic potential and realising the joys of learning.

My approach to tutoring is grounded in the belief that helping students achieve academic success is as much based in building confidence as it is in teaching them content. It is my aim as a tutor to educate and help each student in realising their individual strengths and show them how to best apply these assets to the task at hand; be that entrance examinations, GCSEs, A-Levels, University personal statements or dissertations!
I benefited from the education system at University of Cambridge which focused on nurturing the individual through one-to-one and small-group learning environments. In these situations, the pupil is pushed to arrive at an answer through discussion. From my experience at this academic institution, I found the moments I made the most progress, came when I had conducted my own research prior to the lesson. However, the material I had learnt was more fully comprehended when challenged through debate and when I was made to articulate it verbally. I emulate this method with my tutees, researching the curriculum and assessment objectives thoroughly so that the students are best equipped to both apply and adapt their knowledge in unfamiliar contexts. I hope to give my students confidence in their abilities and enthusiasm for their education and subjects. It is my job as a tutor to teach the pupil independent studying techniques so that their progress can continue outside of our tutorials, too!
Witnessing students make significant developments with the benefit of my tutorials, gives me immense gratification. I am a sociable and passionate tutor who recognises that learning needs to be fun and accessible for the substance of the lessons to have longevity. In order for the student to feel confident they must be comfortable making mistakes and experimenting with ideas with their tutor, thus, I ensure that I am always warm, friendly and encouraging.

Martha gave me the perfect re-introduction into Academics after a long summer off. She was a great confidence-giver, allowing me to create my own ideas and interpretations and encouraging me to look deeper into the aspects of the subject I felt most passionate about.
Inspiring and hands-on Martha also accompanied me to galleries as well as recommending relevant text books. Martha's sessions were not only academically valuable but extremely enjoyable.Martha Murphy tutored my daughter for 6th form entrance to Westminster School. Martha is very knowledgable of English Literature and History of Art among other subjects and always provided well prepared interesting and engaging sessions to inspire my daughter. Martha was punctual and always polite and encouraging. The result being that my daughter was offered a place at Westminster.
