Qualified Engineer with Masters from University of Cambridge

Hello and welcome to my profile!

I am a fully qualified engineer, specialised in the energy sector, with a Masters from the University of Cambridge. I received A1 marks in Maths and Physics in the Irish Leaving Certificate (A* in A Levels Equivalent) as well as first class honours in mathematics and physics-related subjects to a masters level.

Firstly I thought I should give a background on my education. I completed the Irish Junior Certificate (GCSE Equivalent) in 2008, receiving 8 As and 3 Bs, the highest result in my year. I then completed the Irish Leaving Certificate in 2010, the Irish A-Level equivalent. I received 550 points which puts me in the 97.3th percentile of results that year. I received top grades (A* equivalent) in Maths and Physics and the next top grade (A equivalent) in applied mathematics.

For my undergraduate degree, I completed a BEng in Energy Systems Engineering at the National University of Ireland, Galway. I received first class honours for all four years of the degree, finishing top of my class and earning the title of University Scholar. I also received top marks for my final year project which involved designing the propulsion system for Ireland's most energy efficient vehicle (the GEEC), which went on to compete at the Shell Ecomarathon event in Rotterdam, a competition where students compete to design, build and drive the most energy efficient car.

I then went on to complete an MPhil in Energy Technologies at the University of Cambridge, where I am a lifetime member at Selwyn College. This was a combined taught/research postgraduate engineering degree. As part of this, I completed a research thesis on modelling energy use and greenhouse gas emissions in global megacities from now to 2050 as well as a large number of advanced taught modules. Since then, I have worked as an engineer in Ireland and, more recently, a civil servant specialised in the energy sector at the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy.

As a tutor, I am patient, knowledgeable and passionate about helping others. I have previously tutored a number of friends, classmates and family in a variety of subjects. My friends have previously credited me with substantially improving their grades at school and university level through short sessions where I helped them out with difficult subject matters at no cost. My girlfriend is a full time teacher and has imparted a lot of knowledge on the English education system, including what is required to excel at examinations in place here. This, combined with my proven academic track record, means I am able to address problem areas and increase pupil’s understanding of the subject as well as prepare them for examinations and ensure this increased understanding is converted into increased academic performance in examinations.

I am keen to share my knowledge and help students understand areas they find difficult in a patient and understanding environment. I am new to the site but am very eager to get started and look forward to helping students reach their potential.

I am from Ireland originally and have been living in London for a year. My interests include playing guitar, playing football, going to the gym and reading. I also offer beginner guitar lessons and have over 9 years of experience.

I have a full time job so I am looking to do tutoring on a part time basis on weekday evenings and weekends. I would prefer to travel to carry out sessions but am also able to accommodate as necessary. I look forward to hearing from you and please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or need any further information!

Thanks,
Mark
