About Marie

Fashion tutor with a diverse range of industry experience

As a creative teacher, I believe in keeping on top of industry developments by continuing to work in the field. Learners respond well to a teacher who is in touch with the real world, and trust builds between learner and teacher knowing that any questions asked about real world experience can be answered. I enjoy bringing my practice into the classroom, using it when lesson planning and designing resources; showing learners examples of industry work to demonstrate the skills in use.

Many curriculums are lacking the realism of industry and the actual skills required, and my belief is that the wider environment should be at the forefront of teaching, providing opportunities for learners to gain real life skills, practical for the workplace. This will mean learners have a higher chance of gaining a job and succeeding in their professional lives. Computer aided design is paramount for careers in design, can be used for a wide range of job positions and is transferable to other industries.

I believe in teaching using a person-centred approach and that creative subjects taught to young adults should encourage free expression. I like to nurture free thinkers and encourage autonomy with learner-led lessons.
Welcoming ideas from learners and allowing them to negotiate their own learning is important so that they feel empowered. My learners should feel free to express themselves and their personality fully, bringing personal interests into the classroom and informing their talent, meeting their needs to allow learners to reach self-actualisation. Inhibiting any of these qualities is halting creativity and the development of the learner as an independent designer. I encourage learners to be themselves and if they know they face only positive and constructive encouragement, I can ensure that learners enjoy coming to my lessons, are motivated and want to continue to learn.

I have a PGCE in Post Compulsory Education and Training and I am currently studying towards a TEFL qualification.
