Experienced primary school teacher for all abilities
As well as many years' experience of the primary school system, including preparation for SAT tests at age 7 and 11, I have taught children in small groups and individually to develop their skills in maths and literacy. For 2 years, I worked as a Reading Recovery teacher, which meant giving one-to-one lessons tailored to individual 6-year-olds who found reading difficult.
I enjoy the satisfaction of seeing improvements in understanding, whether I am helping a child who has fallen behind or stretching a high achiever to tackle a really challenging task. The advantage of working as a tutor is that I can suit my approach to each child and use resources such as games and practical activities, providing more support than is usually possible in a busy classroom.
Over the years, I have acquired a wide selection of books, props and games to engage children's interest and to make learning fun.
In addition to maths and English, I have a science background and a love of languages. I particularly enjoy teaching primary school French and have even taught it to a small group of pre-school children! My first career was as a computer programmer, which has become really helpful recently, with the addition of programming to the ICT curriculum in primary schools.
Whatever I am teaching, my aim is to promote thinking and understanding as well as finding ways of making crucial facts memorable.
