About Marcus
I am a 29-year-old Oxford graduate (first-class honours) and fully-qualified English teacher with over five years teaching and tutoring experience.
In terms of my own qualifications, I have 11 GCSEs (9 A* / 2 A grades), 5 A-Levels (5 A* grades), a Bachelor`s Degree (1st Class) and a Master`s Degree (Distinction).
I have five years` experience teaching English Literature and English Language at independent schools in Brighton and Bristol.
I teach students ranging from Year 7 to Year 13 and I am familiar with a variety of exam-boards at both GCSE and A-Level, including Edexcel, OCR, WJEC and AQA. I have a strong understanding of exam specifications, mark-schemes and course structures.
I previously worked for the tutoring agency London Scholars, providing 1-1 English tutoring to over 20 pupils across London.

In terms of my tutoring approach, I offer sessions which respond to the particular strengths and needs of the pupil. Through questioning, instant feedback on work and adaptive planning, I hope to create lessons that build pupils' skills and confidence.
I generally build tutoring sessions around practice papers, example answers and mark-schemes, breaking down the tasks so the student can work on the elements they find most difficult.
English is a subject which requires a whole host of skills - timing, planning, structuring, careful reading, comprehension, accurate SPAG (spelling, punctuation, grammar), creativity, analysis, proof-reading - and my lessons encourage students to identify their areas for improvement and to implement practical strategies for overcoming areas of weakness.
I consider myself a warm and enthusiastic teacher. It is my belief that students learn best when they are engaged yet relaxed, when they feel motivated to ask questions and reflect positively on their work.
Should you have any questions whatsoever, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Marcus is a wonderful tutor who helped with my A-Level exams. I was really struggling with Othello and The Handmaid's Tale in particular but Marcus is able to break down essay skills and mark-schemes really clearly. He is so patient and just generally very friendly and encouraging. I don't know my results yet but I can safely say they are going to be a lot better than they would've been without Marcus!
We hired Marcus to help our girls through their GCSE exams. Marcus is a knowledgable, enthusiastic tutor who has given the girls a lot of confidence in reading and writing. At the end of each lesson, Marcus takes the time to explain how the girls are doing and what their strengths and weaknesses are. I can happily recommend!
Marcus was a superb tutor. This is my child`s assessment: "His understanding of the exam boards and the ways examiners mark essays has really helped me to adapt my style of writing and I feel a lot more confident in my written responses. He is always eager to improve my understanding of texts and has helped me become more critical of my own ideas surrounding them. Not only is he a brilliant academically focused teacher, he is an immensely approachable and likeable person".

Marcus is a first-rate tutor who helped me with my GCSE and A-Level English exams. He is professional, experienced and has incredible knowledge of exam boards and set texts. I honestly doubt I would have done as well as I did without his support and guidance. I recommend Marcus unreservedly.
