About Marco
Hello everyone!
I'm Marco, and I've just graduated from UCL with a Bachelor's Degree in Biological Sciences. I'm half-German, half-Italian, and was brought up in Paris, where I attended an international school to pass my GCSEs and take the International Baccalaureate. As a part-time academic coach since the age of 15, I’ve decided to pursue tutoring full-time, and put the first hand experience I’ve accumulated from my academic career to good use by helping students excel to the best of their abilities, and obtain the marks they deserve.
The aspect that I value most about tutoring is the unique possibility to create a customised learning experience that is personable, patient and detailed – elements that can often be overlooked in the classroom due to the more generalised teaching approach and collective learning pace. I know how swiftly the GCSE / IB curricula expect students to process and replicate new information, and how daunting that is when faced with accumulating deadlines and exams – its clear to me how having the right support through it all makes a world of difference. Students are faced with both the academic pressure to do well, and the personal anxiety of their results determining their professional, academic and social future – I want to help them navigate this development confidently, provide a well-informed, uninhibited gateway to the topics, and ensure they know exactly what is expected of them by the time they walk into the exam hall.
Whenever I take on a new student, I feel its imperative to get to know their personal journey with the topic at hand, and their genuine opinions about it – is it a class they’re actually interested in and simply confused about, or do they need help even opening a textbook? It ensures that the tutoring experience isn’t established with the same formality that exists between teachers and pupils in schools – that interplay invariably distances the student from the material they’re trying to learn. I try to create an environment of comfort where they can feel free to pause the flow of the session at any point if they’re confused, and never feel judged for it.
Once I establish that empathy with the student, I conduct the sessions as though they’re a regular conversation, rather than a lecture. I go through the material with them, and get them to explain it back to me, clarifying things along the way. This role reversal exercise directly engages the student with the topic, and builds their confidence. It also provides an insight into their processing of the information, and thus allows us to see any hindering tendencies they might have. Once the student can navigate through the topic fluidly, we set up personalised notes of their train of thought, preserving the exact key moment where all the pieces aligned for them. This way, the information gets recorded directly from their perspective, making it extremely digestible, memorable, and reproducible.
Let me know if I can help out!
All the best

Marco tutored our daughter in maths during the academic year of 2012-13. We were delighted with his work.He demonstrated a real capacity to teach effectively, explaining clearly certain mathematical concepts and operations that our daughter had previously found difficult to understand. He was also reliable and engaging. We enthusiastically recommend him.
It is with confidence that I write this letter of recommendation for Marco Spaeth.
