Friendly, Patient North London Chemistry & Maths Tutor

I am in the first year of my PhD in Chemistry at Imperial College, have 2 Masters in Chemistry and two years of experience tutoring A level Chemistry, GCSE Maths and Chemistry and KS3 Maths and Science through Tutorfair, which I have found very rewarding. As a PhD student I work part time as a graduate teaching assistant in physical and computational chemistry labs for first and second year undergraduate students. I also regularly deliver Spectroscopy workshops in schools as part of a nationwide Royal Society of Chemistry initiative to help AS and A2 level Chemistry students. Before this I spent a year as a volunteer tutor in a GCSE maths class.

As a tutor I am committed and enthusiastic. I am keen to build my students' confidence in their chosen subject and to try and provide some context to the syllabus which can seem at times unconnected and memory-intensive. Lessons with me will be flexible, we can stick to a plan for the term or you can come to me with whatever you are particularly struggling with on the day and we will work through that.

Please get in touch, I can be quite flexible with times (not just what is on here as available) and happy to do weekend and evening visits or Skype.

PLEASE NOTE THIS COMING TERM I WILL BE AWAY ON A RESIDENTIAL COURSE DURING THE 2ND TWO WEEKS IN SEPTEMBER (w/c 11/09) AND THE FIRST TWO WEEKS IN NOVEMBER (w/c 6/11) AND WILL BE UNAVAILABLE FOR LESSONS AT THOSE TIMES.

Reference from Masters Supervisor

I supervised Maeve Kavanagh during her Masters in Green Chemistry at Imperial College. She showed herself to be an engaged and hard-working student with a genuine interest in her Masters project, the subject matter of which was highly multi-disciplinary. Maeve is a motivated student, who is able to collate, analyse and present information in a clear and precise manner. Moreover she is conscientious and pays close attention to detail. Overall I was really impressed with both the output and quality of Maeve’s work over the course of the year.

Maeve manages her time very efficiently and was always well organised and prepared for our meetings. She is able to quickly grasp new techniques, and when confronted with a problem, is able to think creatively and commit the hours needed to solve it.
Maeve was happy to take my direction but also had the initiative to work well independently which demonstrated her strong problem solving ability, which is inherent in the nature of her subject. She has an enthusiastic, confident, personable and easy-going manner that would lend itself well to tutoring.

During the year Maeve also volunteered as a Maths tutor in a secondary school once a week with the Schools Plus programme which she seems to have enjoyed a great deal.

Maeve has been a pleasure to work with over the last year. She will no doubt be an effective and caring tutor based on her strong work ethic and keen interest in chemistry.
