About Luke

I am a full-time private tutor & education consultant with over a decade (8,000+ hours) of experience and an Aerospace Engineering with Economics graduate (MEng & MA) of the University of Cambridge (Pembroke College), where I especially enjoyed papers in Aerocoustics, Flow Instability, and Turbulence & Vortex Dynamics. My 1st class results include Electrical Engineering, Materials, Thermofluid Mechanics, Heat & Mass Transfer, and Partial Differential Equations & Variational Methods. I received my Economics and Business training to Masters level via the Judge Business School, University of Cambridge, with my research thesis pertaining to the cascade effect and its implications for vertical integration in the aerospace industry supply chain. Moreover, I am a full member of The Tutors' Association (a governing body that protects the professional integrity of the industry). Throughout university, I was an Undergraduate Scholar of The Institution of Civil Engineers, The Institution of Mechanical Engineers and The Society for Underwater Technology. Additionally, I have attended the Teach First Summer Institute, where I was exposed to the latest in education theory and pedagogical techniques.

I am passionate about education and feel I have the creativity, patience, experience and pedagogical knowledge to deliver a high quality tutoring service to a wide range of age groups and abilities. My main subjects are Maths, Physics, Economics and Chemistry, which I tutor to all school levels (A-level, IB, GCSE, IGCSE etc.), 11+, 13+ and 16+. Additionally, I tutor Engineering, Maths, Physics and Economics to undergraduate level on a case by case basis. Moreover, I have experience supporting successful applications to Oxbridge for courses such as Engineering, Natural Sciences, Physics, Economics and Computer Science (including preparation for the Oxford PAT, Oxford MAT, TSA, Cambridge TMUA, Cambridge EngAA, Cambridge NSAA, and STEP). As of the 2021/2 admissions cycle, my success rates are as follows: Cambridge - 43%, Oxford - 41%, Imperial College London - 87%, at least one Russell Group secured - 98%. Please see the following article I have written on Oxbridge admissions for STEM subjects.

In my capacity as an educational consultant at Oxbridge Applications, I am in a unique position to offer advice and guidance to pupils regarding funding for university courses, finding internships and demystifying the process of applying to British Universities (especially Oxford and Cambridge). Moreover, I tutor and consult for 19 leading London firms with global reach, in addition to this site. This has allowed me to gain much experience of the 'virtual learning environment' (Zoom, Skype, ClassIn, Miro, Teams, Scribblar, Conceptboard, Bitpaper etc.), over 6,000 hours to be exact. It is exciting to follow the beneficial impact that the emergence of the metaverse will have on interactive tutoring.

It is my belief that the most important quality a tutor must possess is an appreciation of the individual requirements, needs and aptitudes of each of their pupils. Furthermore, I ensure that I identify and develop the natural learning style of each of my students, enabling them to achieve their intellectual potential. This is supported by marking of past papers, notes on exam strategy, and the regular setting of homework. Additionally, I submit a comprehensive written report to both student and parents after each session and encourage my clients to contact me out of hours if they have any questions or concerns.

Moreover, I have an excellent academic record (I achieved 97% in Physics A-Level, 94% in Maths and the top Further Maths mark in my school) and undertook professional internships at a variety of international firms throughout my university career. Professionalism and reliability are the backbone of my service. I have held numerous positions of responsibility including that of CAMbassador (university access officer) and University Collegiate Tennis Captain.

Away from academics, my main interests include racket sports (tennis, badminton, squash etc.), sailing and writing a patent for a novel whistling mechanism I developed at Cambridge.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

An obsession with the documentary series 'Aircrash Investigations' led me to study Aerospace and Aerothermal Engineering with Economics at the University of Cambridge (Pembroke College). Towards the end of my University career, an opportunity arose to work as an Oxbridge interview consultant with an education consultancy that specialises in Oxbridge admissions for STEM+Economics undergraduate degrees. It was thrilling to replicate and modify the infamous Cambridge Supervision system when preparing applicants for their interviews, coaxing brilliant insights from academic high-flyers. This has led to a decade-long career as a private tutor and education consultant, primarily tutoring Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Economics to A-level and equivalent, 11+, 13+, and 16+ admissions, as well as preparing applicants for Oxbridge entrance exams and academic interviews in subjects such as Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, Maths, Natural Sciences, Materials Science, and Economics. I have developed an ever-evolving databank of past and mock interview questions, using this intellectual property to enhance my students' chances of success in the admissions procedure considerably.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

The main subjects I typically cover are Maths/Further Maths, Physics, and Economics. It is especially enjoyable to discuss with students the overlap between Maths and Physics, and, to a lesser extent at school level, Maths and Economics. For example, I enjoy teaching students how the small angle approximations can be useful in derivations pertaining to the simple harmonic motion of the simple mass-bob pendulum, as well as the applications to Young's double slit experiment. In Economics, students are usually excited to use differential calculus to explain why the gradient of the monopolist's marginal revenue curve is twice as steep as the average revenue curve.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

My A-level Further Maths teacher, who I will call Dr X to preserve their anonymity, had an immeasurably positive effect on my development as a pure and applied mathematics student, and instilled in me what I expect to be a lifelong fascination with all things mathematical (recently I have enjoyed exploring some of the most interesting and perplexing definite integrals which emerge in Engineering and scientific applications, as well as the much 'purer' Galois theory). Dr X's enthusiasm for the subject matter and tenacious compulsion to get the best out of his students, all whilst thoroughly enjoying teaching, impressed in my mind a life-long respect for the GOAT.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

The most important quality that I don't think is immediately obvious to many people is the ability to adapt to a student's responses in real time, essentially engaging in a game of intellectual tennis. Quick mental reactions are required. The infamous Cambridge Supervision system provided unrivalled training in this skill. In one-on-one and small group teaching there is no place for a prescribed lesson plan, except in very specific circumstances. Following this in the pack are the usual suspects: patience, perseverance, subject knowledge and a strong pedagogy.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

When I was studying for My A-levels, one of the strongest mathematicians in the year was incredibly disorganised, so much so that he resorted to carrying all of his notes and textbooks for all 5 days of lessons in one large hold-all sports bag. This was back in the day of modular A-levels, so the bag weighed a considerable amount. I distinctly remember walking to the next lesson with him when his rotational stability became compromised and the bag toppled him into a cylindrical recycling bin! Fortunately he survived to tell the tale and excelled in the exams.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

In my subject, Aerospace Engineering with Economics, two years of C++ were required in order to successfully complete the trading algorithm for the LSE and pass the second year. I was relatively new to computer programming at the time, and to make matters worse C (the predecessor to C++) has been described as a go cart with a rocket engine, and with C++ they just added a seatbelt! Like with all things that have a very steep learning curve, the solution was to practice, practice, practice. Eventually the project was completed successfully and I enjoy teaching C++ to beginners from time to time when the opportunity arises.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

For my Masters research project at Cambridge I worked on refining the Helmholtz resonance equations for the ultrasound range in the Engineering department's Acoustics Laboratory. Of all the useful applications, the one I am most interested in is the "silent" dog whistle. In my spare time I pore over the latest aerocoustics research in order to refine my whistling mechanism model, and am currently working on a patent for the whistle.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

I am one of the few tutors in the industry who has been educated in the venerable Cambridge Supervision system, which leaves me with a strong ability to extract flashes of brilliance from my students, cultivating in them a desire to seek out new knowledge and understanding, as well as the versatility to engage in problem solving when they encounter an alien scenario. Moreover, I have been working in the virtual learning environment (VLE) since 2013 and have consulted for several agencies on the development of their own VLEs. Looking to the future, I am aiming to be one of the first tutors to move into the metaverse.
