About Lizzie

I attended Oxford High Junior School and Oxford High Senior School in Oxford. I have a BA in English Literature from the University of Cambridge, an MA in Eighteenth-Century Literature from the University of York, and an MA in Creative Writing (Prose) from the University of East Anglia, which is the most respected Creative Writing department in Europe. When applying for Creative Writing MA degrees I had a 100 percent offer success rate from top UK universities. I am currently working towards my PhD in Creative and Critical Writing at the University of East Anglia. I have been tutoring both face-to-face and online since 2014. I have experience in tutoring English Literature at every level from primary up to A-Level, and English Language from primary up to GCSE/IGCSE Level. I am a friendly and approachable tutor, and I am passionate about making language and literature studies accessible and enjoyable for students.

In the first session I will work with you to establish what you would like to achieve through tutoring. These objectives could be anything from improving your literary analysis skills, essay planning and structuring, exam technique or writing skills. These objectives will be constantly reassessed and are flexible to change as needed. My aim is to help you achieve your potential and we will make a progression plan to enable you to achieve that.

I always prepare my lessons in advance, tailoring them to each individual based on discussions at the conclusion of the previous lesson, allowing both of us to prepare for the next lesson and therefore cover any issues and focus areas that have arisen. We will go through specific exercises to target these areas. I will always check in with students for feedback about techniques they have or have not found useful, and if they have any questions or concerns regarding their learning.

Essay writing and exam technique is often very formulaic, with set patterns being used time and time again, and I can teach you techniques for essay planning and writing so that you know what to expect and how to answer in the best way possible. I will also highlight where you can show your individuality and creativity in both your literary analysis and your individual writing style. I can also work with you on issues of grammar, vocabulary and punctuation where necessary.

I am sensitive to how stressful the academic system can be, and I love helping students develop their understanding and meet their learning goals. As well as being productive and informative, I always work hard to make sure the lessons are a fun environment for my students to help them engage in learning and get the most out of the sessions.

I look forward to meeting you!

Testimonials:

“I am so thankful to Lizzie for her fun, unique, and effective way of teaching. Not only did I manage to improve my performance in English Literature and Language significantly, but I also managed to achieve A*s at GCSE thanks to Lizzie! As someone whose first language is not English, I am immensely grateful for Lizzie’s guidance and support which aided me the most in my success. My essays always received highly detailed and valuable feedback, and each lesson was engaging and enjoyable. I was always very happy to learn from her and would recommend her as an excellent and professional English teacher!”

“Lizzie is an excellent English teacher in all aspects; not only is she extremely well prepared and reliable, but she also provided exceptional resources for every topic I was struggling with, each of which was thoroughly researched. I have had online and telephone sessions to improve my English writing skills since GCSEs until now (University). She has offered great advice on essays and letters that I have written which has broadened my grammar and vocabulary greatly. She is very professional, knowledgeable, positive, and has excellent skills in both formal and creative writing. I would recommend her to students of all ages.”

“I have known Lizzie for 6 years and both of my daughters love their sessions with her. My youngest daughter has been learning English with her since year 7 and I have seen her language and writing skills improve vastly under Lizzie’s guidance and advice. Lizzie has excellent speaking, writing, and communication skills, a cheerful personality, and is very enthusiastic to help others!”

I prepare bespoke sessions individually for each student, based on our discussions around the student's areas of concern and what they would like to work on. I make sure we are working towards specific goals, and I check in with the student's knowledge as we progress and at the end of the session, to ensure that they are able to demonstrate that they have mastered the skills covered.

I believe it is important to work in a way that suits the individual student's own learning styles and what is most helpful for them, and that this is what will encourage learning and enable progress most impactfully.English teacher at Oxford.
