About Kirsten
I gained Qualified Teacher Status having completed a PGCE with Gateshead 3-7 SCITT in June 2017. Since then I have been working at a local nursery teaching children aged 2-4. I have recently been employed as a lead for a unit which supports children with a special education need, completing the planning and assessments accordingly.
During my training I completed my final placement within the Nursery setting at a local Primary School and achieved an overall final grade of Outstanding.
By way of background, making the decision to leave my legal career as a family solicitor in 2016 in order to pursue a career in education was a daunting, yet motivating experience for me. On qualification, and upon being admitted to the role of solicitors in 2015, I specialised as a private family law solicitor at a firm in the North East. During my law training and practise, I represented parents and carers from a variety of socio-economic backgrounds. I therefore appreciate the diversity of children’s experiences and the impact that this can have on their learning and development. Within that role, I also attended Child Protection Conferences and Public Law Outline meetings giving me insight into safeguarding procedures and collaborative working within multi-agency meetings.
A career in education was something that I had always considered, however my law degree led me down the legal path. Upon being offered the position as a school governor at a local primary school, it further affirmed my decision to change careers as being the correct one. I have developed a range of transferable skills within my legal career. These include: the confidence to build professional relationships with collegues; the confidence to deploy support staff effectively; and to apply my legal knowledge of safeguarding children to that of the day to day practice of a school. Sitting on the Education, Governance and Safeguarding Committees showed me the importance of quality teaching and the impact that teaching and active learning can have on each individual child. Within my Nursery placement, my school-based mentor commented on the “outstanding, natural relationships” that I have formed with the children in Nursery. In my previous placements, my school-based mentors have commented on the rapport that I have with both staff and the children, “She has worked well as part of the KS1 team and formed excellent relationships with the pupils, who have responded well to her and she has naturally taken on the role as a class teacher”. I was consistent in achieving both Good and Outstanding grades throughout my final placements.
The experiences that I have had have helped me to understand how important teaching and learning is in providing the foundations for children’s future learning and personal development. Moreover, what became clear to me is that the passion required to be an excellent classroom practitioner is essential in promoting progress for children, as well as developing their self-confidence and self-esteem and this far outweighs the challenges faced. I positively embraced the opportunities during my time on the SCITT programme and I have reflected on my practice throughout.
Throughout my teacher training I had the opportunity to teach children across the primary key stages - up to year 6 pupils due to sit their SATs. I also had the opportunity to take children for 1:1 intervention to assist in developing their knowledge and making progress.
Furthermore, I have also demonstrated a high level of pedagogical knowledge through my academic achievements on this course, achieving two masters –level grades within my most recent assignments. My post-graduate academic research continues to inform my current practice.
I believe that cultivating an atmosphere where children genuinely enjoy their learning and take pride in their work is essential to ensuring that pupils remain engaged and get the most out of everything that they do in school. I have been commended throughout my placements for forming positive relationships with pupils and for effective use of positive behaviour management strategies, ensuring that pupils are happy to take risks and learn from any mistakes.
