About Kiran

I graduated from University College London with an MSci in physics, achieving upper-second class honours (2:1) in 2016. I have since been pursuing my passion as a full-time tutor and have given thousands of hours of one-to-one teaching.

I attribute my progression so far with physics to patience and a deep desire for understanding. I hope to instill the same curiosity and passion for problem-solving that has allowed me to excel, whilst fostering a systematic approach to learning. I come equipped with four years` experience of studying the fundamentals of the subject, enabling me to provide students with a solid foundation for further study.

Mathematics is the language of physics. Through my education, I have found mathematics to both describe the physical phenomena that we can observe through experimentation and derive new relationships. I have studied this in-depth during my degree and will convey the necessary insights that the student requires during my teaching.

I constantly strive to learn new physics, maths, and approaches of teaching to help students achieve their full potential. I am very passionate about what I study and I look forward to helping you to the best of my ability!

What I offer

FULLY PREPARED LESSONS
As a full-time tutor, I am committed to creating the best lesson plans and compiling the best exam questions for my students. The most important step to succeeding in physics and maths is to have good, regular question practice. I provide thousands of specification-appropriate exam questions for my students to work through in and out of the session. I also offer specification appropriate theory for my students, giving them a solid foundation of knowledge to build upon.

CREATION OF EFFECTIVE LEARNING HABITS
Learning is an acquired skill. I push students towards more effective methods of studying. This could include increasing the amount of cognitive effort exerted whilst learning, spacing and interleaving their practice or moving away from note-taking and reading towards more active forms of learning such as question practice and recall.

CONFIDENCE BUILDING
On top of doing extensive exam question practice in the sessions to build confidence, I try to remind students that intellectual ability is not wholly fixed and lies, to a good degree, in our own hands. With more cognitive effort we physically change the brain and its neural pathways. The mistakes we make are badges of effort, which offer useful corrective information and an invitation to double down on our efforts and try new approaches. I also express the importance of experimentation and reflection on the outcomes when studying – a highly effective way of learning that certain students may find daunting.

ENSURED LEARNING
I explain content through a variety of approaches, test my students understanding with question practice and revisit concepts/questions that students find difficult.

ADAPTABLE LESSONS
This is perhaps one of the most important aspects of one-to-one tutoring. The pace, structure and difficulty of lessons is tailored to the student’s ability and personality.

REGULAR FEEDBACK
With frequent corrective feedback, students are continuously guided in the right direction. We are often poor judges of our own ability. I provide weekly feedback on what I believe my students can do to improve.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I developed an interest in physics during my A levels. The aspect of problem solving appealed to me greatly! I would spend hours in the evenings doing physics and maths questions – the satisfaction of finally getting a challenging question correct made the effort all worth it. I began tutoring during my degree. Helping people, seeing their envisioned futures become a reality and knowing that I’m helping the next generation get into good careers that’ll improve our society gives me great satisfaction. I also enjoy being self-employed and seeing my hard work directly translate into my rewards. The freedom and flexibility that comes with this job – being able to go on long hiking trips in the summer is another bonus!
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students.

Quantum physics was probably one of the most interesting topics I had learnt during my degree and something I love to teach. A whole bunch of new mathematical operations and functions were introduced to us that were used just in this topic. It was like learning a new language! I put a lot of research into my quantum physics presentations for tutoring, and it was a lot of fun to do so. Seeing how the intuitive classical view of physics breaks apart in certain scenarios and how it can be explained by quantum mechanics always amazes students.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

I don’t think I’ve ever really had someone I’d describe as a role model. But of course, there are people with many admirable qualities and teachers whose lessons I loved. I had one decent and one not so decent physics teacher, but actually, it was my GCSE English teacher whose lessons I would always look forward to. This was a subject that I had to put a lot of work into to get a decent grade. Generally, up until A levels, I didn’t have to put in much work to get good grades. Do the homework and do a few months of revision before the exam and I’d do well with most subjects (I spent most of my energy on sports and hadn’t yet learnt to translate that discipline into academics). This wouldn’t work with English! Only with consistent work over the two years could I have come out with that A. The teacher was so passionate about what he taught. He had the perfect balance of strictness and enthusiasm for his subject so that we’d always fear misbehaving or missing any assignments, but if we hadn’t displeased him, we would enjoy the long and winding roads of deep and creative thought he would take us down.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

    • Passion for your subject. If what you’re teaching fascinates you (and you’ve put in the effort to create equally fascinating resources), it’ll come across that way!
    • Ability to explain concepts using a variety of approaches. When you see an idea from many different angles it becomes much easier to understand as it can then be related to many other stores of knowledge that you have already accumulated.
    • Patience. Some students may take a bit longer to understand certain concepts than others!
    • Being understanding. Not everyone’s brain works like yours. Being able to empathise with students’ struggles that you may never have experienced is another good quality of a tutor. As someone who generally has a low level of anxiety, understanding how an anxious mind works is something I’ve had to learn over the last decade or so and it’s been invaluable.
    • Being open. A-levels are quite a formative time. I hope that being willing to share my experiences, both the good and bad, academic and non-academic, will help students in their journey through life.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

I was the best at physics in my A-level class (when I finally started consistently studying hard!). I think a lot of things contributed to that. I loved how physics teaches us how the world around us works and I loved problem solving. Truly enjoying the subject and enjoying question practice made the process much easier. This enabled me to do consistent question practice every evening. Consistent question practice is the key to doing well in A level physics and it’s the first bit of advice I always tell my students. Never taking the easy path also helped me. I couldn’t stand being told the answer to something. I had to work it out myself! I would sometimes spend hours on a problem, but the effort I exerted and all the different approaches I took in trying to solve that problem made my understanding of the subject much stronger and much more durable. I wouldn’t forget how to solve those kinds of questions after spending hours thinking about them! I also never let my mistakes define me. Part of learning is about systematic trial and error – making mistakes is part of the learning process. Learning what won’t work is just as valuable as learning what will work as it gives you a deeper understanding of the underlying theory. When researching the science of learning to improve my knowledge and skills as a tutor, I found that a lot of the study techniques I used in my A levels and degree to be highly effective methods for learning. I’m not sure how I picked them up, but I’m grateful. I try my best to pass these on to my students!
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

Adjusting to the workload of A levels was what I found difficult. As I mentioned in one of the earlier questions, I’d been much more focused on sports than I had been on studying. After not doing well in my AS final tests I had a hard look at myself over the summer break and thought about what I wanted to become and do with my life. Ever since then, I’ve always been a hard worker academically. I managed to transfer that discipline and tenacity that I had learnt from sports to studying and it has been invaluable in the opportunities and joy it has offered me. I managed to turn around my grades in my second year of A levels and I did well enough to get into one of the top universities of the country. Sincere dedication comes from within, and you must have a good reason to do what you want to do before setting on your path. Seeing the door of possibilities begin to close when underperforming in my AS gave me a fire that has yet to extinguish!
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

Outside of teaching, it’s sports/exercise. I’ve done a bunch of different sports over the years! Swimming, tennis, martial arts (I have a black belt in Karate), triathlon, weightlifting (Olympic style) and I’ve competed in all of these. For the last few years, I’ve been doing CrossFit, triathlon training and gym work. I also love hiking. I’ve been on a 2-month long expedition with no contact with home to Oman in my gap year. Since then, I’ve done many multi-week hiking trips with friends and on my own to the Himalayas, Switzerland, the Pyrenees, the Atlas Mountains, all over the UK, and hopefully many more destinations in the future!
  • What makes you a Superprof?

I feel like with all I’ve written on my tutoring profile and with answering these interview questions I’ve kind of said it all! I just really want to help. I’ve recently started a YouTube channel where I upload question walk-throughs. I want to have thousands of questions uploaded for all different topics in maths and physics for all the major specifications in the next few years. I will start making crash courses too in the near future. It’s all in the works. I hope I can help as many students as possible, no matter what background they have or where they are in life.
