About Kieran

Hi,

I'm Kieran, a 24-year-old Biomedical Science student at Nottingham Trent University with a passion for all things science, and an ambition to never stop learning. I've just completed my fourth year of study (estimated High 2.1 outcome), including a year working for a leading company in the biomedical industry, with intentions to further my studies into infectious disease and viral vaccines. From my personal experience of growing up, struggling with severe ADHD during secondary education, I recognised that engagement was the key to truly effective, successful uptake and understanding of the material.

To make it easier to find the information you desire, I have laid out my bio as such:

• Why I Tutor
• Subjects I Offer Tuition for
• Teaching Principles and Methods: ACES
• Experience
• Availability
• About Me: Getting to Know Me

Why I Tutor:

I believe a core knowledge of the three fundamental sciences is one of the most beautiful, fulfilling, impactful, and important accomplishments one can achieve; and as such, I am devoted to passing on my acquired knowledge to any who ask. I believe that due to the way the school system works, many students benefit from personalised tuition that teaches them the way they learn best. By doing so I hope to brighten their future academically and career-wise and to show them the beauty of science and how it can be applied to everything we do. My great attention to detail, dedication, perseverance, and innate drive to help others are several reasons why I participate in this vocation.

Subjects:

I am confident in my ability to provide a very high standard of tuition, to aid in academic excellence and personal improvement in the following subjects from GCSE to A-Level standards:

• Biology*
• Chemistry
• Physics

* Although biology is my area of expertise, my course requires me to have substantial knowledge of chemistry and physics, in addition to comprehensive mathematics ability. I have A-Levels in all three subjects, in addition to an AS-level in Maths.

Teaching Principles and Methods: ACES

Wisdom indeed comes with age; however, I believe that having recent, personal experience of the current education system is a significant advantage, as I have become acutely aware of its shortcomings in teaching methods and the support of students.

As a result, I have developed unique and effective tutoring methods based upon my 4 pillars for effective learning (ACES):

• Adaptive - Versatility to tutor in the most effective ways catered to your
individual needs

• Comfortable - Information uptake is greatly increased when learning in a
comfortable environment

• Engaging - Engaging tutoring stimulates higher mental activity resulting in
greater information uptake and retention, especially in those
with attention difficulties

• Supportive - Feedback in a calm, supportive, and non-condescending
manner allows for greater personal growth

The main downfall of any large educational institution is the lack of targeted, personal tuition. An almost impossible feat to achieve if, in each class, there is a student to teacher ratio of 30:1, and the teacher has multiple classes covering multiple year groups. They simply do not have the time to cater to each individual's needs, that's right, individual; every person learns in a unique fashion and that's where I come in.

I believe in taking the time to learn and understand not just the academic strengths and weaknesses, but also the mindset, logical processes, critical thinking, and unique qualities of every student I tutor. This allows me to personalise and apply my tutoring methods in a way which benefits each student by teaching them the way they learn best.

Teaching Methods include:

• Written practice: Exam-style questions, flashcards, writing techniques
• Audio aids: Creating rhymes, songs, word association, even beats!
• Visual aids: Creating diagrams, tables, charts, flashcards
• Physical aids: Choreographing movements, dances, routines
• Verbal aids: Conversing, quizzing, word/sound association, reasoning
• Combinations: Videos can be both audible and visual stimulants

Experience:

Tutoring of coursemates at university
Involved in study groups at Nottingham Trent University
Provide proofreading of essays, assignments, and dissertations at university standard
Volunteered with KiSS (Kiddies Support Scheme) in Uganda for 4 weeks, working closely with children

Availability:

I currently work part-time (16-35hrs/week) to pay for accommodation and living costs; however, hours are flexible and will be willing to arrange work hours around tutoring sessions if repeat appointments are booked.
Willing to work 8 am - 10 pm, weekends included.

About Me: Getting to Know Me

As a 24-year-old, I have incredible drive and determination to understand the intricate workings of our world and universe, ranging from the minute to the massive, hence my love for all things science. Physics builds the foundations for the universe and everything we see, feel, and experience. Chemistry is, at its core an application of the physics behind the particles, atoms, elements that make up the physical matter of our world. My true love lies within the realms of biology, where it's possible to observe and interact with these core foundations in the form of organisms; from tiny viruses, only observable via electron microscopes, to complex organisms like ourselves, in addition to how our environment and universe reacts to changes.

I'm a very active person who enjoys playing many sports, including rugby, football, badminton, and squash. During my time at NTU, I've played in the BUCS rugby union squads, captaining a squad throughout my final year. This has taught me many social and communication skills, and despite numerous injuries, I've believed that being active has huge impacts on mental health and the ability to focus on work. I also enjoy dog walking, and riding my motorcycle.

Summary:

I can aid in the improvement of academic studies by applying the fresh and relevant knowledge I have acquired over my years of hard study and personal further reading; provided in a professional, passionate, devoted, enthusiastic, and most importantly, an engaging manner. From my personal experience of growing up, struggling with severe ADHD, I recognised that engagement was the key to truly effective, successful uptake and understanding of the material. I devised and stand by my 4 pillars for effective learning (ACES). With my tuition, you can become ACES in your studies.
