About Keziah

I am a secondary school teacher, GCSE examiner and tutor with over seven years of experience and a proven track record of improving the knowledge, skills, progress and attainment of my students.
I have worked with KS2 students preparing for SATs and 11+, GCSE students and A-Level students. At each level, I recognise the importance of capitalising on my students’ strengths and using differentiated teaching strategies to meet their learning needs and ensure learning and mastery of the subjects that I teach.
My own academic journey and achievements have put me in good stead to meet the needs of my pupils and I believe that my proximity in age with some of my students has been of great benefit and in feedback from some of my students and parents, it has been mentioned that I am a good role model.
My tutoring of students is not limited to teaching curriculum content. I also support my students in developing good study and exam skills. I have helped students surpass their predicted grades; achieving 100% A* - B and more recently, 100% 9-7 results. In addition, I’ve also supported students in passing 11+/13+ exams and interviews, securing places in top selective schools.
I have also worked as an SEND Learning Support Assistant and this experience afforded me insight into supporting children facing varied barriers to learning in achieving their academic potential.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I've always LOVED Chemistry, but I've been 'better' academically at Biology, so Biochemistry was a great choice for my degree.

I've also always enjoyed Maths but didn't think I would it enjoy it as much at university, so I left it behind but continued to tutor it all these years.

I enjoy teaching Maths and Science because these are topics students often think are "hard" or think they can't do. Watching the confidence grow in my pupils and being a part of so many lightbulb moments make me smile.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

Honestly, I do think there is (some) fun in every topic if you look hard enough… you may have to look harder in Physics!

My favourite topic in Chemistry is probably quantitative chemistry and most of organic Chemistry. In Biology, I enjoy studying proteins, enzymes, evolution and learning about the nervous system. This informed my choice of dissertation research.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

My Chemistry teacher throughout secondary school made me fall in love with Chemistry. I also loved going to his classes because he always managed to accidentally mess up a practical!
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

I think a good tutor is someone that is constantly reflecting on what it is to be a learner. Understanding common misconceptions and things your pupils will find difficult helps you to be more considerate and intentional when teaching concepts - allowing your pupils to benefit from great teaching.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

I loved being in the lab during school and university and as my studies got harder, they were lessons I really looked forward to. Like my Chemistry teacher, I'm pretty clumsy and have occasionally had a few accidents in the lab. The most memorable is probably falling onto a fire extinguisher and extinguishing foam all over my uniform!
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

One thing I've struggled with (and seen students struggle with) is revision techniques. Reading notes and making cool revision cards is fun (and a great form of procrastination) but often not enough to retain information or assess your understanding of topics. I try to help students replace passive revision with active learning techniques such as quizzes, past paper questions and teaching others.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

Aside from teaching the content, another thing I really enjoy is preparing my students for exams. I'd say an immense part of doing well in exams is due to confidence and exam technique. Developing that confidence in my pupils and showing them the 'tricks of the trade' is something I truly enjoy.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P)?

    All my students say so!
