Basic Japanese fun lessons via Skype!

Hi, I'm Kay!

I'm a 27 year old, half-Japanese girl who is experienced in teaching basic Japanese. I first began teaching English in Japan to 6-12 years old children in five different primary schools and had over 1800 students. Although I was not fluent in Japanese at the time, the year that I spent working and staying with my family really boosted up my level in the language. This motivated me to finally take the plunge to go to university and learn my "second" language, and have recently finished my second year in Japanese BA at SOAS University of London.

During my time in Japan, I kept my lessons consistently fun but with a good learning structure. Using games, flashcards, observational props and weekly quizzes, I made sure that the students' attention was on the subject and that they were enjoying the lesson. I believe that having fun whilst learning is one of the key aspects to a child's education. Although I have not had much experience tutoring 1 on 1, I am excited to adapt the knowledge and experience that I have already obtained to help children take another step forward in their education.

I am currently in Japan on my third year study abroad so I would like to remind potential students to bear in mind the time difference if you would like to book a lesson (8-9 hours ahead).
My availability is only Friday, Saturday or Sunday due to my university schedule (times can be negotiated through messaging).
I would also like to request that parents/potential students message me before booking a lesson, so that I can discuss the student's level with them before confirming a lesson date.

Thank you and I look forward to teaching you Japanese!

A tutor I'd recommend to anyone.

I’ve been taking weekly lessons with Kay for just over 6 months now and highly recommend her. She was very patient when I started as I was a complete beginner and felt she struck a good balance between challenging me to improve but not advancing too quickly so that I struggled to understand. Her teaching style is quite relaxed and informal, which suited me well as I’ve often found tutors can be rather patronising, and I particularly liked the selection of games and exercises she’d designed herself, they made getting to grips with such alien concepts a lot easier. I recommend her fully to anybody like me beginning to learn the language as I’ve found our time together very useful, and though I can’t speak for students who start at a higher level, I’ve no doubt that she’d be equally excellent for them aswell.

I'm not studying with the intention of taking exams, but think I've made a good start towards my goal of eventually achieving semi fluency.

Great tutor. Fun lessons and great value

I've been doing lessons with Kay for several months and would definitely recommend her as a Japanese tutor. Her lessons are fun and varied. She provides work sheets, and sets attainable goals and gives homework each week. I found that these all contributed to my learning and that this made it easier for me to learn. The lessons are well structured and focus on reading/writing, learning words (with the use of picture cards) and dialogue practice. I've found that Kay is very flexible when it comes to booking lessons and the lessons sometimes go over and do not feel rushed. The lesson price is much lower than competing tutors as well. If you are looking for Japanese lessons I would definitely recommend Kay.
