I'm here to help with patience and compassion.

I am a PhD Student at the University of York with extensive classroom and tutor experience. I have experience working as a secondary school teacher in Canada, as a Teaching Assistant at Queen’s University, and many years experience as a private tutor for primary to university-level courses. In all of these roles, my goal is to work alongside students to develop skills. I am able to help with essay outlines, the editing process, developing grammar skills, and final reviews. I have worked with primary aged-students of all abilities, developing learning strategies and methods that best suit their learning style, such as flash-cards, using known interests to engage with difficult tasks to make them more approachable, and making learning fun.

One of the key components to teaching is making learning fun, positive, interactive, and rewarding. I have extensive experience working as a tutor, and my main motivation is to show students, children or adults, that not only can they do it, but that they can achieve their goals and feel excellent about it.

Additionally, I believe that making learning a fun adventure is key to instilling life-long learning skills in children. Learning or studying is not something only the esoterically-inclined do; no, learning is something that follows us throughout our lives. It is important for young persons to have a positive and reflective experience, so they will try new things and dream fantastic dreams. Nor is learning one-sided; a teacher is a facilitator, but that teacher is always willing to listen and reflect upon what the student thinks, says, and does.

Best,
Kat

Kat is a positive and amazing role model

When I met Kat, I was impressed with her own sense of self and her love of education. When Kat started working with our daughter on math and French, I felt that Kat established a nice balance of fun and discipline by encouraging and modelling ideal work habits. She was flexible in her teaching plan but came to each session with a goal for improvement. My daughter Thea, was able to learn the multiplication table, which she was never able to master in her school lessons, and she also developed a much stronger understanding of French. Kat was a wonderful tutor and I feel so lucky that our daughter had the opportunity to meet and work with such an admirable individual.
Outcome:
Excellent outcome. Thea's grades improved, but more importantly, she gained confidence through her accomplishments.

Unmatchable skills and commitment

Kat is an amazing tutor, her essay editing skills greatly assisted me with the mechanics of writing an A+ 4th year English Literature paper (a significant improvement from the last paper: C+). The detailed comments explained both flaws in how I structured the content of my paper and thesis, as well as grammar issues. She is really good at explaining how to fix things so they make sense.

Kat really goes above and beyond to make me feel confident in the work I have done. She's pushed me to think in new ways and this has allowed me to try new approaches and significantly improve my grades! I will continue to refer her services to others because she is an amazing resource (just no one else in my class).

Outcome:
Overall excellence as a tutor; significantly improved my GPA, improved competence and comprehension for the material after working with her.

Positive review of Kat's position as a Teacher's Assistant for a senior year history course in French Enlightenment at Queen's Universi

I would like to write about the profound impact Kat Manica had on my understanding of the French Enlightenment. Taking a four-year course in my third year of university, I, Paras Memon, was taken aback by the stressful workload and the expectance of refined writing skills- neither of which I was prepared for, and good at.
Kat Manica worked with the class as a group, but also gave a lot of one-on-one attention to students who came for help, myself being one of them. Being unsure of readings, or my understanding of the readings, Kat was very attentive and positive in improving my footing in this course.
Emails were sent out before class of Kat’s personal notes that would help people to be more knowledgeable of the readings and/or feel more confident in their own notes. Emails would also be sent out after each class, with notes that Kat had taken of the class’ discussion. Neat and concise, not only teaching students about the French Enlightenments, but what proper notes should look like.
I am very glad to have had the opportunity to work with Kat. She has helped me grow as a student, and to continue to grow on my own after the completion of the course and her departure.

Ancient History (Degree)
Outcome:
I passed the class with a 75%, which is also known as a B. This is the Canadian grading system.
