About Joss
With 12 years teaching experience I offer affordable lessons in Music, Music Theory, and Composition (of all styles) to students of all ages and abilities, from GCSE beginners through A-Level (AQA, EdExcel, and Cambridge exam boards) all the way to University Graduates looking to put their skills to practice and develop.
I give Piano and Guitar lessons from absolute beginner all the way up to Grade 8 classical, acoustic, jazz and rock. I've helped many students achieve Distinctions in classical/practical exams (ABRSM and TrinityGuildhall exam boards), assisted students in writing and producing their own songs, and for many provided a relaxed space to just jam and improvise. My past students have ranged from 4 to 65 years old (and everything in between!).
Outside of teaching I am a professional composer. I've written music for 8 primetime tv shows on Channel4, BBC1, BBC2, and ITV, including The Apprentice, The Taste, The Secret Life of 6 Year Olds, and The Big Allotment Challenge. I've had concert works premiered at The Royal Albert Hall, Cadogan Hall and The Lincoln Centre. I've had pieces commissioned by the London Symphony Orchestra and am currently composer in residence with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. In 2022 I was also nominated for a BAFTA for my short-film Musical 'Stuffed'.
I also have a fierce passion for Music Theatre and have also played in about a million bands, everything from big bands to Jazz trios, indie and metal band, function bands, so can certainly help if this is something that interests you!
Happy to do lessons in your home or at my home in South London.

I have worked privately as a self-employed music tutor for over 12 years. I have taught piano and guitar from absolute beginners all the way up to Grade 8 Classical and beyond (using both ABRSM and Trinity/Guildhall Syllabus'), as well rock and pop (using both the Rock-School syllabus and a more relaxed, less structured approach), country, and Jazz, I've helped students with burning ambitions to be singer-songwriters to write their own music and have helped a number of students start bands with friends. I have also tutored many students music theory to help them achieve successful grades in both GCSE and A Level, both privately and in groups. As an initially self taught musician I often try teach students to teach themselves, so their progress continues outside of the lesson time, and I try to create a relaxed environment in which students of all ages and abilities feel comfortable making mistakes and asking questions.

Joss is an exceptional Guitar tutor and I would highly recommend him for anyone interested in learning guitar or improving their existing skills. I am an adult wanting to learn classical guitar and working with Joss to improve my ability has been both an enjoyable experience and has seen rapid advances. Not only does Joss focus on key techniques for the pieces you pick, always looking for points of improvement, but he also ensures that the fun and pleasure of playing the guitar is always present.

Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the teacher
Joss is very patient and able to relate to a lively student and tutor him in classic guitar. He adapts the lesson to capture and maintain the interest of the student. I would recommend him to my friends.
Since Joss took over teaching our son classical guitar about 15 months ago he has contributed substantially to his passing the grade 3 exam with distinction and getting a music scholarship to a local secondary school. They get on really well but Joss never lets him get away with sloppy playing. He'll be taking grade 4 soon, but in the meantime they split their time happily between classical guitar, electric guitar and experimenting with his new loop pedal!
Joss tutors my son, who was a complete beginner. He's making good progress and looks forward to his lessons. Joss is willing to adapt his lessons to incorporate what my son is interested in (chords early on, specific pieces). I definitely recommend him as a tutor.
My daughter's started from scratch about a year ago, aged 7 and she looks forward to her lessons. Joss is enormously supportive and manages to combine gentle discipline with enthusiasm. A great teacher.
