About Joshua

Experienced tutor of philosophy and mathematics

I am a New Zealander living in the UK, having just completed a PhD in philosophy at the University of Sheffield. I have a wide range of experience tutoring and teaching both philosophy and mathematics at the university level. I welcome students from secondary through degree level in philosophy and through to first-year university level in mathematics.

My research and teaching in philosophy covers the full range from close, context-sensitive, readings of historical texts to contemporary technical work. I have tutored logic at the University of Sheffield for four years. It is particularly rewarding to see students mastering this material when they were intimidated by it at first. I have also tutored philosophy of religion, critical thinking, ancient Greek philosophy, and early modern.

My undergraduate work in mathematics included both pure and applied analysis and abstract algebra, along with probability theory, set theory, and computability theory. More recently, I have taught, and helped to design, a mathematics module for arts and humanities undergraduates. This module covered basic statistical methods using Excel and various online data sets that were selected according to student interest.

Something completely different: I also have experience tutoring beginners bass guitar with both small groups and one-on-one. I enjoy giving students the basic skills that will stand them in good stead to advance further in whatever styles they want to explore.
