About Joshua
My Service
Economics, English, Philosophy, Politics, Business Studies
I am a professional tutor with over 5000 hours teaching experience over a career in private education that begun in 2012. I was a full-time Economics and Business Master at Harrow School from 2015-2018. I specialise in the subjects I most enjoy – Politics, Philosophy, Economics and English – and in University Admissions to elite universities such as Oxford, Cambridge and LSE. I have experience preparing students for 11+ Pre-Test, 13+ Common Entrance, GCSE, IGCSE, A-Level, IB and Cambridge Pre-U examinations and university admissions tests such as TSA, PAT, MAT and STEP. I have also taught several undergraduates in PPE-related disciplines. I deliver lessons both in-person and via videocall. I hold an MA in PPE from St Benet’s Hall, Oxford.
My work is split evenly between in-person and online. Where desired, I will make every effort to come to you. This is made easier by me driving.
The online side of the business has grown recently, and many of my clients are residents in Hong Kong and mainland China. I regularly tutor clients in Russia, Monaco, Korea and Spain.
In terms of hours, I am flexible to suit client need.

Thank you for your consideration. If you are interested in booking a slot, please run by your location and preferred time with me first before booking. I travel quite extensively and normally allow for one hour travel between sessions. On occasion I may need to allow longer if my previous client is very far from you. Furthermore, I often have regular slots reserved for clients who have yet to place their booking that week so it's always best to check first. Finally, if you can do week daytime slots (9am-5pm), e.g. for home schooling or study leave, please highlight this in your message.

My approach
My philosophy of education is a Platonic one. I believe education creates opportunities. Passing exams is vital. Exam success is a necessary condition for progression through- and success in - the academic system. That said, great education involves much more than acing exams. I feel very grateful to have had some brilliant mentors throughout my academic life. These individuals went well beyond the confines of the syllabus. They showed me how knowledge could be applied, explained how it fitted in with the real-world and put it into context. They taught me intellectual skills of analysis, argument and discernment. They developed character virtues, helping me become a better person. The lessons these mentors taught me are still guiding my conduct to this day.
I honour these mentors in my own work, with a strong focus on developing balanced, effective, rigorous individuals over robotic exam-machines. Yes, my students excel in examinations – you only have to look at my results record to see that. They also tend to improve in their other subjects too, as a natural by-product of their improved skillset. The strongest endorsement of my approach, however, is the excellence success my students have in further education and beyond.
My Background
I graduated from St Benet’s Hall, Oxford, in 2012 with II.I in PPE. I maintained an interest in all three disciplines, though excelled particularly in philosophy, where I scored the top mark in the year in one of my papers. I won a scholarship to undertake my research in Philosophy at the University of Birmingham in 2013.
I began tutoring privately in 2012, and since then have had success I could not have predicted.
I have worked with clients across the globe, as a freelancer and for high-profile agencies such as Oxbridge Applications and Winland academy/Sower Education group. I spent three years honing my craft at one of the world’s most prestigious schools, Harrow School (London). My role involved a demanding array of academic, pastoral and sporting responsibilities. As well as teaching, I was a House Tutor in Headmaster’s boarding house and Head of the School Basketball Program.
In these three years, I learnt a huge amount about teaching, mentoring and coaching.
Alongside my work at Harrow School, I also took on roles delivering admissions consultancy for non-profit organisations such as Generating Genius and the Lumina Foundation. Being from a working-class background myself, I am very conscious of how many talented individuals can slip through the net. It gave me great joy to provide invaluable advice to such individuals.
I left Harrow this year to explore other avenues in education and pursue my creative interests. Since leaving, I have authored a book on UCAS personal statements and taken on a role providing admissions consultancy to students in Asia.
Education is my vocation.
Outside of academia, I have two loves: writing and sport. I publish several times a week to my own website, and my first volume of poetry will be published in 2019. In the sporting realm, I have had some hard-won successes. I won two Rugby Blues for Oxford, had the honour of representing England at U18 and University level, and played semi-professionally in the years 2015-2017.

Josh has worked with our son for the last 4 months via Skype and he has made a huge difference. He has expected a lot from O but our son has quickly grow in confidence and wants and more importantly believes he can achieve a good grade next year. We would highly recommend Josh to anyone

Josh is a highly intelligent and skilled professional who has experience tutoring individuals and small/large groups. He is an excellent motivator with superb subject knowledge who is willing to go the extra mile for his students.
Joshua Halstead (or Josh as we now know him) acted in a private tutor capacity for my son M, helping him with his A level Economics between September 2013 and the exams in May 2014. Despite working quite hard for his AS level exams in 2013, M performed fairly averagely (Economics, Geography, and Politics).
Josh worked with M over the course of nine or ten months, initially on weekly hourly tutorials and homework tasks which we gradually stepped up as the A2 exams approached. M responded very well to Josh, they very definitely hit it off despite the pressure Josh put on M to raise his game. I cannot emphasise enough the difference Josh made to M, both technically in terms of his grasp of the subject, but the confidence he gave him to go into the exams knowing that he was on top of every aspect of the Economics curriculum.
Josh's intervention had the effect of helping M lift his grade from a mid to low B at AS level Economics to an A* at A2 level. I am sure that Josh’s help in terms of approach to studying etc also helped M in his other two subjects as he gained A grades in both Geography and Politics, missing an A* in Politics by just 2 marks.
Josh is now tutoring my younger son for A level economics (October 2017)View more recommendations
