About Joseph
I am a composer and artistic director who specialises in cross-genre work. I love teaching, and bring a broad range of musical experiences to my lessons.
I am an experienced piano, theory and composition teacher, having taught since 2008. I have a Bachelors degree in music from the University of Cambridge and a Masters (with Distinction) from Kings College London in September.
I am familiar with all conventional exam curricula, but especially love teaching my students around examinations. My students learn to work independently from a variety of teaching techniques and styles. I do not produce ABRSM clones, or GCSE box-tickers, but well-rounded pupils with both the skills to pursue music in the long term and to excel in conventional exam systems.
I have a strong record, helping students achieve A and A* grades at A level and GCSE music in Composition for a number of students, including SEN students who started with very low predicted grades. I have recently brought a disengaged 11-year old girl from Grade One to Grade Six piano in three years of tuition.
I have a broad stylistic knowledge. I am a contemporary classical specialist, but I have also played in rock and pop bands, classical orchestras and am familiar with jazz and hip hop styles. As a composition teacher, I am fluent in both notated music and in electronic, DAW-based composition.
I emphasise teaching students a broad range of skills, and have particular success in teaching complex theory through pop music without students getting bored or frustrated. As all my students learn both notation and chord diagrams, they tend to excel in other aspects of the music curriculum as a result.

Joe has proven to be an engaging and dynamic tutor. My daughter, though musical, had disliked having lessons previously but now positively looks forward to her lessons with Joe.
