About Joseph
I am a freelance musician and educator based in London. As a performer, I am active as a solo, chamber and orchestral clarinettist, appearing as a soloist, orchestral and chamber musician at venues all over the UK.
In my teaching practices I always endeavour to pass on my enthusiasm for the craft of making, performing and appreciating music to all my students, irrespective of age or ability. My teaching has ranged from near-beginner to diploma/advanced level. For my younger/lower-level students I try to create a rounded approach that focuses on fun and freedom to explore, treating each aspect of their musical study as feeding into the others rather than being discrete elements. I always use a piece of music as the starting point for a new topic or piece of information, rather than introducing them as abstract ideas.
With my advanced students I encourage them to penetrate deeper into the music that they are studying; to start to explore ideas of interpretation and self-expression; to consider and discover aspects of music history and context; to provide them with a secure technique to realise their musical ambitions on the instrument; and to broaden their listening and musical experiences to include a variety of different genres and styles. Where possible, I try to tailor the programme and pace of study to each student's needs, rather than being governed by examination schedules and syllabuses - however I can also focus on preparation for a particular examination or admissions process.
My other related skills include chamber music and ensemble coaching, conducting, arranging and accompaniment. I frequently bring these skills into my lessons - accompanying at the piano where possible encourages the student from the outset to listen, to be sensitive to other musicians and to look beyond the limited information of the music on the stand. I will also arrange for my students, for example if they show interest in a certain style, genre, composer or artist, or perhaps if I believe that a specific piece, melody or song will most effectively open the door to a new topic or area of study.
Being a freelancer requires a high level of organisation and time management, and I rigorously apply these principles to every aspect of my professional life. Keeping detailed records of a pupil's progress and trajectory is very important, as is maintaining clear and open lines of communication between myself and clients.

Joseph has been tutoring my son for five years in Music and piano lessons, and most recently he helped my son prepare for his interview at Cambridge. Joseph is so friendly and personable, and so there’s been a great connection, and my son has really
enjoyed his sessions. Joseph is reliable, well-prepared with detailed lesson plans, and is prepared to go the extra mile to ensure his pupils can fulfill their potential. He’s also been very responsive to all our messages and has been so flexible when we’ve needed to change lesson times. I’m so glad we found him!Joe is a fantastic clarinettist, musician, and one of the brightest people I've come across. He has great patience and knowledge of a wide range of subjects, and as a colleague is always professional and discreet. I highly recommend Joe!
