About John
I am a graduate of the University of Bristol where I studied Philosophy and Politics before undertaking a Masters degree in English Literature.
I want to help unlock the potential of students preparing for GCSE and A-levels, not only in English language and literature, but also Politics, and Critical thinking.
I offer assistance in the development and fine-tuning of revision methods and exam technique for those in major exam years, and I will also take students back to basics in order to achieve the clear and precise writing style that exam boards demand.
I was held back from the discovery of my passion for learning by lack of confidence with reading, and now I want to transmit my excitement to students who might otherwise find reading and thinking about literature daunting. Self-confidence in the basics of a discipline can be the difference between 'loving' a subject and 'hating' it.
Even at academically competitive schools, children who are seen to be 'keeping up' often receive very little individual attention. I saw my grades improve markedly between GCSE and A-level with the help of a holiday tutor, so I understand the value of one-on-one tuition. The relationship between a student and their teacher has a significant bearing on the student’s appetite for learning, which is why I aim to engage with tutees and tailor lessons to their interests and needs.
Having decided to throw myself into tutoring, this (concealed information) provides an amazing opportunity to earn a living whilst also helping students from every economic background.

"John is very helpful, his knowledge of English is excellent. He has built great rapport with the students; this makes him an invaluable and effectual member of staff. John has a lovely way about him, he is a popular member of the team." (English department, Phoenix Place)
A very kind and positive tutor who has a calm way about him, who motivates you to do well. He was very flexible about what to cover during the very well planned out sessions, having no problem with last minute changes (e.g. despite planning a lesson, there would be no problem if it had to be changed to cover extra revision for a test that was coming up).
John has been really useful in helping me with my A level English literature course. He has read the books I am studying so that he can help me to understand them more. He is very easy to talk to and it is very easy to ask him questions. He is great at getting you more interested in the subject and therefore enjoying it more and working harder. He goes over past essays that I have written and explains to me how I can improve them in a very positive manner. John is very relaxed, easy going and reliable.
John was really helpful with my politics essay. I wasn't sure how to tackle it so he talked me through ideas and helped me to structure my argument. He was very clear and made the essay seem a lot less daunting! He was helpful in the sense that we openly discussed the question and relevant themes, so I was able to come up with ideas without it feeling like it was all his work. Highly recommended and Very helpful!
