I am a passionate and enthusiastic tutor with a wide range of experience in education including as a science teacher on the TeachFirst programme, working for an educational charity to place PhD students into schools to deliver bespoke tutorial programmes and now as a private tutor since October 2012. I greatly enjoy being a tutor and understand the importance of my work for the students I teach; everyone goes through the education system and it is important that they have the opportunity to make the most of it. That is why I take an uncompromisingly honest, organised and professional approach with all of my clients and any other tutors that I work with and have worked closely with several of the top private tuition agencies in London, and am a 'featured tutor' with one of them, having been sent to work with several clients who have previously been unhappy with other tutors.

Private tuition is an incredibly effective way of delivering education, when done properly. Many of the practical issues in schools such as disruption and having to deal with students working at varying speeds and levels do not exist in private tuition. Nonetheless, that does not mean that private tuition is straightforward. For private tuition to be effective I believe that there are several things it is essential for the tutor to ensure:

- Building a strong student-tutor relationship. The student must feel confident enough to talk openly with their tutor about whatever might be affecting their education.

- A baseline assessment. At the beginning of any placement you must establish the starting point; how much does the student already know? This does not necessarily mean setting a test or exam.

- A clearly structured programme based around the relevant curriculum. Both the student and parents should know what the aim is and how we will get there.

- Creating a positive learning atmosphere. Tutorials should be enjoyed and learning can be an incredibly rewarding and interesting activity. Mistakes are absolutely acceptable and an integral part of the learning process and it is important that students know that they are allowed to make them.

- Regular, honest feedback to both students and guardians. It is important that the student and the parent both entirely understand how much work there is still to do and if we are on track.

To do this well requires tremendous patience, the ability to listen, flexibility and a calm temperament. I try to meet the high standards that I set myself all the time.

What are my interests?
My academic history is a little unusual, having studied both sciences and humanities to a high level. My strongest interests are in biology, history and current affairs but I read widely on a range of topics and enjoy learning for its own sake. In addition, I have undertaken a significant amount of research into education and the private tuition industry itself, writing a substantial report on the prospect of recruiting 'career tutors' in January 2013. I continue to offer educational consultancy services to both tuition agencies and private clients.

Results and Testimonials:

"It is very difficult to express how grateful we are to you for what you've achieved with our son.
The challenges he has presented along the way have been met with patience and respect. Your perseverance and dedication are remarkable, but add to this your good humour through it all is what makes you a truly outstanding teacher. He was lucky to have you on his side." (History A2 Home Schooling)

"J has been accepted to Radley. He scored all As on his exams. Thank you very much for your kind help; you are a very organised and a very good tutor. You have prepared us well for the exam and I really appreciate that." (13+ Tutoring, science and maths)

"John is brilliant. He is always very polite, conscientious, punctual, very smart, funny, patient." (13+ Tutoring)

"John is quick to understand, dynamic and inspiring. For a 10 year old struggling with confidence in maths, he is perfect. Thank you so much for finding him." (11+ Tutoring)

From a private tuition agency:

"I’ve just spoken to [the parent] and I’m really thrilled to say that she could not be more pleased with you. She thought that you were really professional, organised and a great teacher. A huge well done on this one as she has not been easy to please in the past!"

"We’ve also had some lovely feedback from [the parent] saying that [the student] would have sessions with you every day if he could."

Excellent Tutor

John is a very competent tutor and knowlegeble and resourceful tutor. He is very organized and structured; his lessons prepare the student very well for the exam. He also communicates well to the parents, so we are reassured that our child is ready for the exam. He is friendly, firm and very professional. We are very happy to have him as our son's tutor.

An excellent, imaginative and committed tutor

My son was extremely discouraged about his maths having just gone through a major period of illness. He had been moved down a set at School. Mr Nichols came and helped him to stop panicking, and systematically built his knowledge and ability. His confidence returned (our main aim) and his marks went from 60% to 89%. John also gave him his undivided, non-judgmental attention which boosted his morale and self-esteem. We are very grateful to John indeed.

Maths (Primary)
Outcome:
Our son went from the bottom set back up to the top - but most importantly regained his confidence in maths.

GCSE Chemistry

John is an exceptional tutor which helped my daughter to archive an A at GCSE level. Thank you!
My daughter liked John's structural approach and finally understood Chemistry. We both felt, if we had started tutoring with John earlier, she might have enjoyed the subject during the two years of the GCSE course. I can recommend John highly he was always punctual and very friendly.

He's fantastic!

John was the perfect tutor for my son Jack. His enthusiasm for this subject was infectious & like other reviewers have said, the structure & organisation of the lesson was perfect. Biology was not my son's favourite subject by any means but John found ways of engaging Jack & the result was an A in GCSE. Thanks John, you were brilliant & we look forward to seeing you when the time comes for my daughter.

Brilliant

John is a really brilliant tutor. His enthusiasm and knowledge as other reviewers have highlighted is hugely impressive. However his real skill is his ability to match his teaching style to the learner and support them to develop the tools to learn and develop their learning in that subject Invaluable.

Supportive every time

John has been a help to our son we wanted him to sit for 11+ for a few private schools. Johnhad encouraged our son so much and broke things down to help our son to prepare him for the 11+ .

Our son had done amazingly well as he was one of the top performers , John had turned things around with just 5 lessons.

John always dealt with any concerns or questions we had and was always reassuring us that he would be ok and it has been great to have a wonderful tutor I couldn't ask for better really

In our first session John showed enthusiasm, passion and great knowledge for his subject and course materials that we would find helpful. He quickly put our son, who was a little nervous, at ease and we are looking forward to working with him in future sessions.
