Specialist AS/A-level Physics Tutor, Qualified Teacher

I received a 1st-class degree in physics (Southampton) and the award for the best result in the year. I've been involved in physics for over 10 years in numerous capacities. Since graduating, I've tutored and taught for over 4 years, primarily the AQA, EdExcel, OCR A and OCR B syllabi. I completed my teacher training (PGCE) at a sixth-form college where I taught post-16 Physics and Maths. I've also spent two years researching the Northern Lights in Southampton's Space Environment Group, where I published a paper, and spent another two years working at the University of Oxford in a non-physics role.

Past students have described me as friendly, encouraging, supportive, and trustworthy. I work with students to develop their thinking skills, self-confidence and subject knowledge, and believe that all students can reach their aims with the right guidance and, of course, enough hard work. I can do home visits or Skype.

Working with me will help you to:

-- foster a deep understanding of physics
-- learn to think like a physicist
-- improve your mathematical skills
-- develop your problem solving skills
-- improve your continuous prose writing
-- improve your exam technique
-- build your self-confidence
-- develop effective study skills

Each lesson we will go through topics in a conversational manner, with intermittent problem solving, followed by more practice towards the end. Questioning and feedback will iron out any misunderstandings and help you to understand the subject. Homework will be set after each lesson to consolidate the knowledge and skills learnt. Tutorials are supportive and relaxed, but hard work is required throughout.

Please do get in touch if you have any questions and note that my availability is flexible (I am able to do other times to what is on the calendar).

Fantastic tutor

John taught me A-level physics and if there was anything I didn't understand he would be able to provide a practical example from all the topics and would use them to clarify my understanding.
He will take to time to learn the specific syllabus students are studying and will walk through each topic setting work to be done to reinforce the students memory of the topic.
When it gets to the exams he will go through past questions with students and explain the mark scheme if required.
I was very happy with John's method of teaching and would recommend him to anyone who wants extra tuition.

Brilliant tutor

John tutored me during my AS levels for physics. He was brilliant, helping me understand topics which I had trouble getting to grips with in college. He knew my syllabus inside out and had great resources to help me consolidate what I learnt. He gave great revision tips and ideas which helped me in my personal preparation for the exams.

Recommendation for John S

John taught me AS physics last year as I was resitting a couple of papers at the end of my final year in college. What I really liked about his teaching was the way that he broke down difficult topics into smaller, easier segments, and how we didn't move on until I was happy and confident with it. Like any other teacher, John set homework based on what we'd have gone through during the session. We went through them each week to check that I was happy and was ok to move on. Working with the subject specification, he taught me everything that I needed to know, leaving nothing out and sometimes going even further by giving information that goes beyond the syllabus, but is still relevant to what we were covering. Another thing that was good was how he was always there to help with the A2 side of the course even though he was there for teaching AS. John wasn't just available during the sessions. He was easily reachable by phone or email, which meant that if I had any questions, or problems, I did not have to wait until the next session.
Finally, he was always punctual and was extremely reliable. If he couldn't make a session, he'd let me know well in advance. He also offered to make up for those session another time during the week.
I'd definitely recommend John for those who require physics tutoring.

Outcome:
I gained a lot more confidence in physics not just at AS level, but at A2 level as well. I felt like i knew what I was doing/writing about and this showed on past papers that I had done in preperation

Reference for John S

To whom it may concern,

I am very pleased to provide this reference for John, who tutored me in A-Level Physics at Wessex Tutors in Southampton from September 2014 to June 2015.

The lessons with John each week were one to one, and he took me through both my AS and A2 modules in one year. He was always knowledgeable and supportive, offering ideas and different ways of thinking through questions. I encountered problems along the way with the material, and John was always patient and offered alternative observations to help me approach issues from a different perspective, encouraging me to find my own way to the answer. John also provided extremely beneficial support in terms of helping me with my University application, such as explaining the differences between certain courses, which I had not known previously. This helped me to feel more confident in my choices and in pursuing higher education. I am glad that I had the opportunity to study with John, as I believe he consolidated and enhanced my knowledge of the subject matter, and without his support and guidance, I do not believe I would feel as confident about my future education as I do now. I would wholeheartedly recommend John as a tutor, his light hearted and relaxing way of teaching combined with his knowledge is key to helping guide a student through their studies.

Yours faithfully,

Kirsten Ogilvie-Goddard

Exceptional Tutor

John helped me revise AS level Physics throughout my A2 year in College. The work was extensive and hard to manage however I felt John really pushed himself to help me with whatever aspects of my studies I was struggling with. The way in which John conducted himself was both professional and yet informal enough to make me feel comfortable asking questions I felt were ones that would be seen as obvious within a class environment. John was a fantastic tutor with a great knowledge of Physics and the ability to make every session interesting.

Excellent physics tutor

Despite only having a few sessions with John, his lessons really boosted my confidence. His clarity in teaching the core principles, and his knowledge of the syllabus were both extremely beneficial in the exam itself. John's lessons helped me to achieve an A grade in OCR A AS physics this year.
That was written by my daughter. She found John's explanations clear and illuminating, he was patient and knew his subject very well. The tutorials were conducted via Skype, which she found extremely convenient.
We would both recommend John, without hesitation

Indispensible

John was attentive and focused on achieving not just great grades, but a holistic understanding of the material. Not only did he feed back on mock questions, but facilitated learning through enthusiastic and enjoyable discussions.

Very helpful

John's teaching is very logical and well structured, helping me to understand a topic I previously did not. He tailored the lesson around the speed of my understanding, and although this can sometimes take time, I was surprised about how much ground we covered in the first session
