About Johann

I love maths and I want to help you do better in your exams. Whatever your goal is we can achieve this through practice. I was home-schooled from the age of fifteen and I am very familiar with online tutoring, both as a tutor and a tutee. Having completed my A-levels only a few years ago I understand how challenging it can be to remain motivated. Together we successfully will get you through this critical period of your studies, so that you can go on to do whatever you want.

Since practice, and consistency are key to achieving a higher grade in your maths exam, and numerous studies have shown that spaced repetition leads to much more effective learning, I recommend having three lessons per week. I offer a discount if you book three lessons per week. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact me.

I teach online using a collaborative whiteboard called Bitpaper. We both will be able to see the same screen and write on it. In our lessons we will focus on solving problems, understanding exam language and exam technique through practicing exam questions making it so that completing the easier questions on the exam paper becomes second nature, giving you more time for the more challenging questions.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I have always loved maths. I have had the best tutors myself - my A-level Spanish tutor now teaches at the UN, my Physics tutor is at the forefront of research in string theory and my Maths tutor is a successful actuary. I know a good tutor can make all the difference.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I thoroughly enjoy teaching Maths as it helps me hone my own skills. One of my preferred topics is Surds. It makes sense to me as it is related to Algebra and Algebra is one of my stronger topics. However, I find tutoring parts of Geometry challenging. For example, the interior and exterior angles of many-sided shapes such as a hexagon are hard for me to explain because it is one of my weaker topics.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

My Grandfather would tutor me in Maths as well as my Mum. They both would say: ''There is no such thing as a bad student, only a bad teacher''. That always inspired me to keep learning and I have kept that mindset when tutoring.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

There are so many qualities that make one a good tutor! If I had to narrow it down, I think one needs to be patient, perseverant, and consistent. It takes time for students to grasp what they are being tutored and at times it can be frustrating when they don't understand something. It reflects poorly on one as a tutor. However, my patience, perseverance, and consistency lead to my students understanding the material better and improving their results.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

I grew up in Croatia and went to primary school in the Croatian education system. At the age of fifteen, I switched to the UK system and took my GCSEs. It was challenging making the switch but I learnt how to adapt. I think being able to adapt to new environments is key to attainment.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

When taking my A-levels I failed the practical exam for Physics. I had to retake it and scored a high A on it. It was a lesson of perseverance and as I previously mentioned this is important for being a tutor. It is also important as a tutee. Maths is a constant learning experience. You can always improve. I am sure I will be faced with many challenges when I start my Degree in April of 2023.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I love teaching. Receiving positive feedback for my lessons is so encouraging, it makes me feel happy and fulfilled! I also enjoy being there for my students, being a constant support throughout their studies both academically as well as on a deeper level.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

As I previously mentioned, the qualities that I think are most important to be a good tutor are perseverance, patience, and consistency. I believe I have all of those qualities. I am also friendly so don't be afraid to book a lesson with me!
