About Joao
Hello, my name is João and I'm from Portugal. I began my musical studies by learning alto saxophone back when I was 12 years old. Since then I've experimented with various other instruments such as Piano, Guitar and Recorder and feel very comfortable teaching all of them.
I've been teaching for the last 6 years and I have experience with students from 10 to 65 years old.
My academic qualifications (BA in Music Education/M.Ed in Music Teaching) gave a deeper insight and knowledge about pedagogy and teaching strategies. My opinion is that you can't force someone to like playing music, they have to discover it themselves and my role is to provide a context and environment to make that possible.

I always try to tailor my lessons around the students, both their personality and musical taste, and I think that's very important factor whether I'm teaching young children, teenagers, or adults.
Besides the standard music practice that goes on in a class, I often listen to music with my students, improvise and talk about the mechanics and theory the music language.
You can expect a devoted teacher from me.

What a great guy. Attention for detail and makes the lessons for the children a lot of fun,
We started during the quarantine, and could not have had a better teacher. Joao has given our kids a great skill, his passion for music and the guitar and teaching is reflecting. Didn’t think that online teaching was going to be so easy, especially for children they are only 5 and 7.

Translation from Portuguese:
I was João's piano student for 3 years and I enjoyed it very much! I really liked the repertoire he chose for me (Classical and Jazz) and his very personalized way of teaching.
He is nice, funny and we became great friends. In some of our classes he took the time and helped me develop and improve some of my personal projects.
The best piano teacher I've had.
João has asked me to write a recommendation letter for his appliance for a position as a music teacher. Having been his classmate and friend during our masters degree I feel I have a good perspective on his knowledge, skills and virtues.
While we were writing our masters thesis, I was able to accompany him on his journey, and heard of his obstacles and concerns. I noticed a deep concern for an understanding of what goes into the education of musicians, namely the repertoire utilized, but also elements of what can a teacher do in order to improve the learning of one's students. João is a very critical thinking person.
During our period as students I was also able to listen to his ideas and experiences he'd be having as a teacher during the week. He would be telling me in excitement how the choice of certain repertoire and class activities really resonated with his students, or in others days how certain activities did not have the impact on his students in the way he would like, showing that his work was not just inside the classroom, but was also something he would be thinking over during the rest of the week by figuring ways to motivate his students into learning music, something that João himself is very passionate about.

I loved having João as a teacher. I started my lessons with him around 4 years ago, only a short time after I started playing the saxophone. In that time, I made an enormous progress, not only as a saxophone student, but as a musician overall, and I can say that João motivated me to learn and practice for many more years to come. His technical competence made him an amazing teacher, and his personality made him a great friend, also because of his young age. I believe in his ability to develop a connection with any student and push them to their fullest potential, and although I am sad for not having him as a teacher anymore, I am truly happy for his career in England.
