About Jessica
Jessica K is a visual artist living in her adopted home Edinburgh, Scotland. Her oil paintings are in private collections across the United States, Europe and Australia. As an Abbey Award Fellow and RAIR Grant alumna, she has developed her work in vital art communities. With painting at the core of her art endeavor, you may find Jessica making video art, teaching art to both young and old, or creating murals on commission. She believes that painting is a visceral anchoring into living sensation.
Learning is a collaboration between the student and teacher. As an artist/teacher, my pedagogy emanates out of my studio practice. I believe in teaching out of the wisdom discovered in the studio and to present myself as an artist. I often develop lesson ideas while painting, or even teach on a visual problem I am overcoming myself. I can be as equally inspired by a student’s creativity, as the student is motivated by my assignment or exercise. I feel this exchange encourages the students’ self-reliance and ownership for learning, in addition to fostering individuality and confidence.
If being an artist is a complete allowance to ‘be oneself’ I present students’ with multiple styles, periods, and histories to encourage the experimentation needed to discover personal style or natural aptitude. However, I do believe that observational drawing is a powerful ingredient to a visual arts education, as it usurps the more dominant verbal centers in the brain. Drawing from perception engages analysis of aesthetic form, and develops visual literacy. Furthermore, as the skills and values underscoring contemporary art evolve, I feel that arts education can beautifully connect traditional and new medias.
I have much to offer the art student in the realm of figurative drawing and painting. However, in appreciative view of the vast art historical pendulum between figuration and abstraction, my classes create a dynamic between observational, precise methods, with expressive, subjective modes. I employ non-objective methods to convey principals of design and composition, in addition to providing students with the personal experience of process, intuition and imagination. I have found this balance between control and release to be very effective in my students’ ability to bring thought into vibrant form.
The criteria for determining performance in the art class are varied and often shrouded by the machinations of a pluralistic art world; in this way I gauge a student’s success by his/her level of engagement, self-reflection, willingness to challenge themselves technically, show conceptual depth and take personal risk involved with self-expression or truth. I believe my primary responsibility as an art teacher is to not only ensure students of art gain proficiency in their medium, but to create a safe classroom atmosphere that forges dialogue, artistic integrity, and motivation for further learning.

I have known Jessica for many years now, and I think that she is one of the most talented artists that I’ve ever met. She’s also a very creative writer and has a real passion for knowledge. I have found Jessica to be a natural educator who can intuit what approach she should take with a young person. She truly enjoy working with her students and delights in their development. Jessica always takes great initiative with a positive attitude. She is thoroughly qualified, and I know she will make an excellent tutor.
