Tri-lingual Masters Music Student, 4 instruments many genres
I am currently a masters student at the University of Bristol studying composition for film and television. I am a multi-instrumentalist who plays piano, guitar, bass guitar and sings, primarily in jazz and pop but trained classically. I have a deep understanding of music theory (Grd. 8 ABRSM) and history (Bachelors degree) in a wide variety of genres and styles, having studied and performed many different settings.
I encourage my students to take a broader view of the music by using examples from their everyday listening. I believe that too often the conventional ABRSM classical approach confuses students and they are unable to understand the reason why theory is useful and more importantly how it can be applied to their own skills. By doing this I hope to help my students develop a keen interest in music and thus take their ability to the next level.
I am originally from Hong Kong and am fully bilingual in English and Cantonese with fairly good fluency in Mandarin, so I am happy to teach Cantonese and basic to intermediate Mandarin to those who are interested as well.
I have taught Jerold for 4 weeks now on an MA-level music technology-related subject. I have also known of him previously as an undergraduate in the same department. Jerold has been reliable, punctual and enthusiastic in his studies with me.
