About Jenny

Qualified and Experienced Chinese Mandarin Teacher

Hi, my name is Jenny, and I am a very experienced teacher from Taipei, Taiwan!

I have been a teacher for 16 years, and I hold a professional qualification in teaching Mandarin Chinese as a Foreign Language at SOAS, University of London. I usually teach English in my home country, but I also have a lot of experience teaching my native language to individuals, small groups and classes in colleges in London, and I am a skilled Chinese calligrapher if you are also interested in learning this skill, a beautiful Chinese art. My class structure is based on what is effective from my real teaching experience and my academic studies on teaching Mandarin in particular, and I try to make my classes as student-centred as possible.

In my class, you will learn to use Chinese words and phrases from day one, from a native speaker with clear Taiwanese pronunciation (a kind of pronunciation which is considered one of the clearest Chinese accents), and because I come from Taiwan I can easily help you with traditional or simplified Chinese, it’s your decision. Or, if you’re not interested in the difficult Chinese characters, we can also work in Pinyin, Chinese written in the English alphabet, just to focus on your speaking and listening rather than reading and writing.
Your class will be tailored to your own level and your own needs, although my usual classes involve strong focus on all of speaking, reading, writing and listening. In order to achieve these things, we will use textbooks, CDs, newspapers, worksheets, visual materials, tasks and of course face-to-face chats!

Overall, I want you to have fun in my class, no matter what you study, your level, or your age- I want you to experience the amazing language and culture of the oldest society in the world, and with my help, you can do it!

1. From my student Tom in Taipei and the UK

To whom it may concern,

I worked with Jenny in my first year living in Taiwan, and so when she found out I was studying Chinese part time and she offered to supplement my college classes with one on one twice a week, I knew from personal experience she would give me her full attention. Although I only planned to work with Jenny for a couple of months, she helped me so much that our classes actually went on for 2 1/2 years until I felt I could easily get by in daily life in Taipei without a lot of extra studying. At first she was perfectly able to fit our classes around my college textbook, and after a couple of months I gave up college to do my classes full time just with Jenny as I didn't feel I needed to pay for both! Jenny not only adapted really well to my class, but she also made materials that were appropriate for my level and I felt her patience and commitment showed a great deal of respect for her students. I would wholeheartedly recommend Jenny to Chinese learners of any level, as she personally helped me develop from a low level to a high-intermediate level.

2. From my student, Yvette at the class: Chinese Stage 2, Morley College

Dear Sir/Madame,
I hope this email finds you well. I am writing to you to express my happiness with the Mandarin course this term. Our tutor Jenny was fantastic and consistently went out of her way to assist us. Despite being drafted in at the last minute she rose to the challenge and provided with classes that were engaging fun and challenging.

Additionally, she was patient and attentive. I am very satisfied with the course this term and hope that Morley College will do all they can do to ensure she stays on to teach next term.

Thank you for providing a brilliant teacher. I look forward to being taught by her in the near future,

Kind regards,

To Whom It May Concern,

It is my absolute pleasure to recommend Jenny Lee for the position of Chinese teacher.

Jenny was my teacher at The Language Centre at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London from April to June of 2016.

I enjoyed my time learning Chinese with Jenny. I have been learning Mandarin Chinese for over a year and I learned to appreciate and value teachers like Jenny who demonstrate patience and understanding whilst continuing to motivate students. Jenny is incredibly hard-working and manages to make every lesson challenging yet thoroughly enjoyable.

Jenny brought students at different levels together and her ability to explain new vocabulary and grammar – without ever uttering a word of English, was both effective and impressive.

Without hesitation, I confidently recommend Jenny to join your team. She is dedicated and fosters positivity among students and colleagues. I know that she will be a beneficial addition to any organization.

Please feel free to contact me by email or by phone should you like to discuss my experience with Jenny as a teacher. I would be happy to expand on my recommendation.

Jenny is a capable and enthusiastic teacher who is well prepared for her lessons. She keeps things moving along nicely and uses a wide variety of material, some she prepares herself and some audio and video which keeps things interesting and challenging. She is genuinely interested in her students and keeps in touch with them, often offering to help with their Mandarin studies even once the class sessions are completed. She is also very good at stepping in at a moment's notice, in fact when I studied with her she came in when another tutor could not longer teach the class. I recommend her as a teacher to anyone who is keen on learning Mandarin.
