Find out more about James

Find out more about James

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I have always had an interest in the human mind and understanding behaviour, but that interest was sparked in a more concrete way when I studied psychology for A-level. I started tutoring shortly after finishing my degree.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I think it is fascinating to study psychology because it can teach you more about yourself, increase self-awareness, and about others, to increase empathy. So I feel it is not only useful but life-enhancing. There are many psychology topics I find interesting, e.g. the techniques of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, which helps people to become more aware of their thought processes and thus change them, and has been empirically shown to improve mental health.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

I was blessed with a number of great teachers over the years. One of my best teachers was one who always inspired me to go a little further with a project than I thought I could!
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

There are many qualities that can help, such as being conscientious, responsible and well-prepared, but I think one of the most important is to be receptive, responsive, and a good listener, so you can tailor your lessons to the needs of your students.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

I remember helping my friends with their schoolwork, in a very natural way. I realise now I was already tutoring, from a young age. I think that if you look back on the things you enjoyed doing, and did naturally, when you were growing up, it can sometimes help you to find the work you enjoy doing in adulthood.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

One challenge is communicating large amounts of information in a clear way, in ways that are digestible.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I am fascinated by psychology, but I am also passionate about teaching in general. I also love the other side, learning new things. I think the more aware we are of ourselves and the world around us, the more able we are to have a positive impact.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

I am dedicated to helping my students achieve their full potential.
