About James
Contact me for catch-up, exam preparation and the confidence boost you may need. Happy to work online or in person, please feel free to discuss.
I love the subjects that I teach, I find use and interest in them everyday and in every way. I endeavour to instil this love and passion in my students and help them to find their own success and enjoyment in the subject. My PGCE and teaching experience have given me a range of tools and techniques to help students of all ages, backgrounds and abilities.
I am an approachable and friendly person, who is able to build relationships that work with students, that help them make progress and achieve their goals. My ultimate goal is to make myself redundant! By supporting students in their learning and instilling in them the confidence, skills and resources to help them succeed.
My other loves include sport, travel, adventure, food and learning. I try to combine the lot and took part in a round the world sailing race without having done any sailing before. When travelling I try to learn something about the culture or language and normally try to do this over a good meal.
I graduated from the University of Cambridge in 2004 with a degree in Economics and Education. I have always had a dual interest in economics and business and in education and my career reflects this. After graduation I worked as a Stockbroker in the City for Hoare Govett for 5 years before completing a PGCE in Mathematics at the University of Oxford. Since then I have worked in an Academy in West London as a Maths, Form and Economics teacher, and also an International School in Switzerland as a Maths teacher and Dorm Counsellor. I have tutored mathematics (7+ to 11+, KS3, GCSE and A-Level) and Economics (A-Level and Undergraduate) at various stages since I left Tonbridge School in 2000 and have enjoyed it immensely.

Always working with the child at their level, I start with a session to get to know my students and ensure that the fit will work best for them.
I want to help them find joy and confidence and make myself redundant! It is the goal to have students develop the skill and knowledge to be independently making the progress they want.

Perfect! Works to understand where the gaps in knowledge are and then starts to work with the student to build from
there. Good energy and positive demeanour- James's response :Jack is working hard and focusing well on what needs to be done for him to meet his goals. We are working on him asking the right prompt questions to help unlock multi-step problem solving and also t realise which tools he has that will help him to make progress with challenging questions.
Perfect! Our son is really benefitting from James’ methodical approach and we can see his confidence around Maths has started to increase. We would highly recommend James, particularly for Year 13 students.
- James's response :Joe is working well to develop his confidence and competence across a wide range of topics. His self awareness is well developed and helps him to focus where he is likely to make errors and correct or minimise these as best he can. It's great to work with him and I look forward to him reaping the rewards of his efforts.
Perfect! A Level Maths Tutoring D to an A
I was really really struggling with maths before I met James.
I got a D in my A Level mock and then I started having sessions with James. His enthusiasm and genuine passion for the topics really helped me see maths less as the worst subject ever and slowly but surely made me see it in a more positive light.
With James’ help I ended up getting an A in the actual exams and made my uni offer!
Without james I honestly don’t think I would’ve gotten into uni so he comes highly recommended from me.
Thank you so much!!

If you are lucky enough to get James as a Tutor you should thank your lucky stars. He helped my daughter attain As in both economics and Maths at A level. He went above and beyond and was around to help her on the tricky first year uni maths for economics. He then helped my son get an A in A level economics. I could not recommend him highly enough. He is a fantastic person as well a great teacher. If I had him tutor me 40 years ago I might have done more than scape a C !

Our daughter began her A-Level Maths course with concerns over her ability to truly understand the many new concepts that would head her way. She is a very hard worker and, once shown a technique, could mimic what she had learned easily, but was confounded when similar questions were presented to her in a different way. She recognised that she was grasping techniques, but not learning fundamental theories, in her Maths classes at school. James quickly developed a rapport with our daughter and diagnosed her specific issues. He came up with a customised programme appropriate to her needs, balancing alternative explanations for the theories she had already been exposed to in school with a rigorous set of practice work that highlighted where the system would try to ‘trick’ her. James’ ability to engage with our child, enthuse our child and guide our child to her best possible performance represent an absolute credit to his skill and capabilities as a tutor. He should take pride in the A grade she achieved. We would give James our highest recommendation to fellow parents looking to focus and enhance their children’s mathematical performances.
I highly recommend the services of James Roger as a tutor.James was the maths teacher of my three boys age 11, 8 and 7 for a term while my children were home schooled. James is very conscientious and has always planned and delivered his lessons in a professional manner in line with the curriculum. James has always offered a good diversity of learning activities to my children and made each lesson really engaging and fun. He has clearly demonstrated his ability to challenge children with different abilities but also different learning styles and ways of thinking! My three boys have expressed that they really enjoyed each session with James because he challenged them and made them think "outside the box".James is very personable, adaptable and knows how to make complex concepts easy to understand. His passion for the subject and his boundless enthusiasm for learning are infectious and my children found James very inspiring.
James is my son’s maths tutor and his tutored my son for the past year. My son is currently at a state primary school and I engaged James to help him prepare for the 10+ entrance exams for some very good private secondary schools. James is a friendly and professional tutor, who is clearly passionate about maths and was able to correctly assess my son's level and engage his interest quickly. James is always encouraging and stretched my son in the subject whilst keeping the lessons enjoyable and lively. My son looks forward to his lessons with James and showing James what he achieved in his maths homework. My son's confidence overall has also increased. James was also happy to spend a lesson doing a mock interview with my son (with my son as the interviewer and James as the interviewee!) and he helped my son think about what about what he would like to get across to his interviewers. Certainly my son seems pretty relaxed before each of the interviews he was called to after sitting the entrance exams.
I would highly recommend James as a maths tutor.arranged one two-hour session with James for my son. this was to get my son to have some in-depth discussion on economics issues so that he would be familiar with oxbridge economics interviews. my son throughly enjoyed the session and found James very passionate, knowledgeable and intelligent. My son left the session feeling very motivated and reassured. We highly recommend James service.
Very grateful for the tutoring James provided for me. Well prepared for every session and explained everything in a way that could be understood...much easier said than done! He was supportive throughout the whole process and in what felt like no time at all transformed a D into an A. Highly recommend!
James is the best tutor I've ever had. His boundless enthusiasm for the subject is infectious, and lets you learn in an environment of discovery as opposed to mindless repetition. He manages to inspire a motivation for self improvement which you will find affecting you long after he's left the classroom.
This on top of James' funny and warm personality makes it an absolute crime to miss having him as your tutor.View more recommendations
