About James

Contact me for catch-up, exam preparation and the confidence boost you may need. Happy to work online or in person, please feel free to discuss.

I love the subjects that I teach, I find use and interest in them everyday and in every way. I endeavour to instil this love and passion in my students and help them to find their own success and enjoyment in the subject. My PGCE and teaching experience have given me a range of tools and techniques to help students of all ages, backgrounds and abilities.

I am an approachable and friendly person, who is able to build relationships that work with students, that help them make progress and achieve their goals. My ultimate goal is to make myself redundant! By supporting students in their learning and instilling in them the confidence, skills and resources to help them succeed.

My other loves include sport, travel, adventure, food and learning. I try to combine the lot and took part in a round the world sailing race without having done any sailing before. When travelling I try to learn something about the culture or language and normally try to do this over a good meal.

I graduated from the University of Cambridge in 2004 with a degree in Economics and Education. I have always had a dual interest in economics and business and in education and my career reflects this. After graduation I worked as a Stockbroker in the City for Hoare Govett for 5 years before completing a PGCE in Mathematics at the University of Oxford. Since then I have worked in an Academy in West London as a Maths, Form and Economics teacher, and also an International School in Switzerland as a Maths teacher and Dorm Counsellor. I have tutored mathematics (7+ to 11+, KS3, GCSE and A-Level) and Economics (A-Level and Undergraduate) at various stages since I left Tonbridge School in 2000 and have enjoyed it immensely.

Always working with the child at their level, I start with a session to get to know my students and ensure that the fit will work best for them.

I want to help them find joy and confidence and make myself redundant! It is the goal to have students develop the skill and knowledge to be independently making the progress they want.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I have loved both the subjects that I teach since school, inspired by some special teachers that instilled that passion in me. Since I was in sixth form I have enjoyed helping people understand things better and working with others to push them to progress. Having qualified as a teacher over a decade ago, I haven't looked back.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

There aren't parts of Maths and Economics that are not fun to discuss!! I can get excited about any of it, and I love linking both to the real world and other areas of study.

Maths is everything, and it is beautiful that we are discovering where it exists in nature, Physics and our everyday interactions, how it defines, describes and explains the world we live in. How can you not love it?!

Economics is such a fascinating discipline, as it tries to explain the trillions of decisions and interactions between people, markets and firms every second of every day. The A Level course is such a great challenge as it is often the first time in years that students start a brand new subject, and it helps open their eyes to the ways in which the world works. Add to this the numerical, analytical and evaluative skills that are developed and I think that students with this qualification are such great thinkers.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Mrs Owens and Mr Hughes were my first maths teachers, and they were incredible. Demanding, but patient. Always pushing us to explore and think about ideas and techniques so that we really understood and mastered them, long before mastery was even an idea in education. My housemaster at school Mr Gibbs is an extraordinary man, who inspired manners, respect and had a great sense of humour. I hope that I can honour them and these values as I strive to be the best teacher I can be.

But my ultimate role model was my father. Intelligent, thoughtful with high expectations of those around him and hope for the world in general. He thought that there was nothing that could not be achieved if you worked hard, were considerate of others and had a generosity of spirit.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Patience, good humour, compassion, high expectations, respect, good communication, thoughtfulness, creativity and a genuine love of helping others become the best versions of themselves. I see it as my job to make myself redundant, having given students the skills and confidence to learn and excel independently.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

As a teacher, I now understand this incident on two different levels, but one late winter evening at school, our maths teacher set us a challenge that I think he hoped would occupy us for a good deal of the lesson - we all now know what teacher tired feels like! It was to explain a technique to prove that there were infinite numbers of numbers between any two numbers. I was surprised to almost immediately spot a pattern that would provide a solution and my hand shot up. Instead of being irritated that his lesson plan had not provided the silence that I now know he might have hoped for at the start of the lesson, his praise and excitement actually had the whole class clamouring for more such challenges in our last-in-the-timetable maths lessons. As a humorous kicker, he sent me to the headmaster (a Classicist) to explain the theory, which I did with enthusiasm, but I am not sure I managed to get him to fully understand. But I am sure that this incident inspired me to be a teacher myself and create such exciting moments, and be able to share and explain them to an excited group.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

Once I got to my final year in school, imaginary numbers was the last thing I remember understanding at 17, the rest of the course was beyond me at that point. However, at university, we were faced with increasingly challenging applications of pure maths in economics and suddenly I felt I was hitting a wall of calculus. Thanks to the support of teachers and the belief that they were able to instil in me, I never saw these barriers as places to stop, just moments to pause and try again.

When teaching economics, the most challenging thing I find is teaching good evaluation, and helping students realise how the subject is still evolving and that economists are often (mostly?) wrong!! School students are amazed when they are offered the opportunity to make errors, or learn how to think critically and debate topics without the need to be right, they enjoy simply understanding better.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

Education for me is the most important thing we do. Teaching others, sharing expertise and understanding, creating new ideas and inspiring thinking help foment all innovation and human progress. Being part of an endeavour to develop young minds, to help them learn and love to learn, as well as finding a way to incorporate character development and instil timeless values makes this the most rewarding job in the world.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P)?

If I cannot make myself redundant and help students find their own feet then I cannot call myself a Superprof. But I think that my students all feel that they benefit from more enjoyment, better understanding and greater independence as learners as a result of the time we spend working together.
