About James

7+ to 13+ consultant and examiner with 16 years experience. 90% of my students have won places at St Paul's, COL, Westminster and KCS Wimbledon. Unlike many tutors I can cover all subjects - English, maths, reasoning and interview preparation. I have one of the best success rates in London as I focus exclusively on entrance to these top tier schools. If you wish to discuss your situation I can arrange to call you prior to booking lessons. My lessons are always results orientated and I specialise in expert initial assessments which are used to create structured study plans for my students.

I cover most of the competitive schools in the London area including Westminster, St Paul's, Latymer, Merchant Taylor's, Tiffin, Eton and many more. As well as English, Maths and Reasoning, I also cover interview technique, exam strategies and confidence building. As an additional service, I can create custom practice papers for you based around the pupil's individual needs.

I tutor one to one but also organise group mock exam sessions through Exam Academy - my exam preparation consultancy. I have helped many pupils get into their first choice of school and can provide excellent references from London and international based clients.

I offer a 'no strings attached' initial consultancy where I can answer any questions you might have.

I look forward to hearing from you.

In the first lesson, I provide a detailed assessment of every student which allows me to put together a detailed study plan. Every student is different and I take care to tailor everything to their needs.
Following this, every lesson is carefully planned, usually covering a mix of required subjects (I cover maths, English, reasoning and interview preparation).
I discuss the outcome of each lesson with parents so that everyone is clear on progress.
As I have over 15 years experience I am able to create past papers and questions that are tailored to the student; these are normally sold by other companies for hundreds of pounds. These are provided to you as part of my service - they are not available anywhere else.
I work alongside educational psychologists which allows me to support any needs a student may have. I have experience teaching a wide range of SEN clients, including those with ADHD, dyslexia and students with working memory issues.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I was fortunate to study at Cambridge and began tutoring in my spare time while I was there. I found it extremely rewarding and didn't at the time consider it to be a full time career. However after working with hundreds of students since 2004, I am pleased to say it has developed into a very busy profession.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I graduated from Cambridge University with a 2.1 in philosophy / English, so I'm confident in these and any related subjects. I also hold an MA in philosophy from Cambridge University.
I mainly focus on entrance exams for primary and secondary schools in London. The exams range from 7 plus all the way to 13 plus. These are usually private schools but I also cover the state grammar schools. Exams for these schools are very competitive with thousands of children applying. They often include English, mathematics and verbal / non verbal reasoning, and an interview. I cover all of these aspects which puts me in a unique position among tutors - I can help with all aspects of the process.
I like to discuss all of these subjects with students. Teaching creative writing and new vocabulary are particularly rewarding as we can use videos, pictures and other multimedia in the lessons to generate ideas.
I am also a specialist in GCSE / A Level English and philosophy / religious studies.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

My philosophy teacher during 6th form was very inspirational - I hadn't studied philosophy before and because of him I ended up studying the subject at university.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

You need to have knowledge and technical ability in the subjects you teach, as well as knowing how to teach. However even more important is an ability to connect with people of different ages and backgrounds, and to encourage them to invest in learning - make it meaningful for them! Of course, qualities like patience and understanding are important - it helps to remember what it was like to be a learner and a young person as then you can empathise with the students more.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

A great teacher can create a love for a subject which lasts a lifetime. I didn't enjoy maths when I was at primary school but I was lucky to have a truly great teacher - their passion made me passionate!
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

Teaching 11 plus students can be difficult as primary schools have very different approaches to the material. I have to make sure that the work I do complements what a child does at school.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I have a passion for teaching as it can really transform a person's life. It is one of the few jobs where you can have a truly great influence on someone's development.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

I like to let my reviews speak for themselves. I believe this is a results orientated career and I do pride myself on my results. Over 90% of my students get into top schools such as St Paul's, City of London, Eton and Westminster.
