About James
I very passionate about my subject and hold a PhD in English Literature and also a PGCE in FE. I am expert in guiding students toward the grades they wish to achieve in GCSE, A Level or Degree. I also have 6 years of experience teaching EEL English, and 5 years in Business English.
I have taught English Literature at degree level (University of Glasgow and Anglia Ruskin Universities), Peterborough Regional College And also taught ELF and Business English abroad for six years. I love teaching and am very hard working, punctual and capable.
I use a mixture of techniques in my tutoring tailored to individual learners and am always well organised and plan very carefully: this is key to the lessons being effective. However, the learner involved must also be prepared to put the necessary effort in if we are to see effective results!

Dear Sir or Madam,
I have been asked to provide a reference for Dr. James Fountain in support of his application to be a tutor at this site. I have known James for many years, first as a Ph.D. student in English Literature at the University of Glasgow, where I was studying and working as a Graduate Teaching Assistant, and subsequently as a colleague in the Department of English, Languages and Communication at Peterborough Regional College, where I worked as Higher Education Programme Leader for the Arts and Sciences.
James’s talents in the broad field of English are far-ranging. He is a successful academic researcher, having completed a Master’s and a doctorate in English Literature and published both scholarly essays and newspaper and journal articles in his field of expertise (the work of the modernist poet Joseph Macleod). He is also an acclaimed creative writer, having published an autobiographical novel, Out of Time, in 2006, as well as a number of poems in various well-regarded poetry journals. Last but not least, he is an experienced and skilled teacher of English, having gained experience in a range of educational settings, from one-to-one tutoring and mentoring to teaching classes in further education and lecturing in higher education. At Peterborough Regional College, he taught Key Skills English, GCSE English, Access English and A-Level English Language and Literature within the college’s further education sector. He also lectured at the University Centre Peterborough on the degree in English Literature, teaching on a range of texts from Shakespeare to the modernist novel. James subsequently decided to gain further experience of teaching English as a Foreign Language and moved to Saudi Arabia, where he taught English at a range of different institutions.
James is not only highly experienced and knowledgeable in his field; he is also a pleasant and supportive colleague. At both Glasgow and Peterborough, he was always popular both with the students in his classes and his fellow English teachers. I have no doubt that he will be an excellent tutor and am happy to recommend him. With a doctorate in Literature, James is able to make good use of his knowledge in delivering the literary aspects of an English programme, providing invaluable insight into the learning of this subject for students. He has excellent knowledge of this aspect of the curriculum as one would expect. James has extensive experience of EAL students and he ran the IGCSE EAL programme in which his students achieved excellent grades.
