About James
Business, Maths and English as Foreign Language specialist for student confidence and well-being.
Availability: online only, weekdays from 1pm.
Currently working from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
BACKGROUND:
I have a first in Aerospace Engineering (BEng (hons)) with Business, from two universities: Hertfordshire University (where British Aerospace originated) and West Virginia University, in the United States.
My work prior to teaching involved website development, sales and business development, marketing, writing, running my own business across Europe, setting up an award-winning innovative charity fundraising initiative and managing sailing voyages across the Atlantic. I am also a care for and coach people suffering with low confidence, mental disorders and other issues involving stress and/or depression – though I am not professionally trained for this. I have had training, however, for child safeguarding, pedagogy and multiple teacher training courses.
Due to my diverse career and education, I discovered the need for a holistic approach to learning and coaching for student/colleague well-being and success. It became apparent to me my aptitude and satisfaction for tutoring and coaching others. For this reason, I decided to get into teaching full time. I very much enjoy the feeling of helping others to fulfil their potential, especially when they start to improve their results and attitudes to learning and advance more quickly than they expected.
CREATING THE ENIVRONMENT:
To achieve this, I find that it is important to create the right environment for each student. One in which the student feels able to express themselves freely and comfortably, owning their learning objectives and begin to enjoy the process more or often for the first time. This empowers them to take learning a step further, increasing the feeling of being in control of their studies and promoting their general well-being.
Ultimately, the student’s goals are my main focus, both study related and in terms of confidence and ability to perform under pressure – they all have different needs and issues, which need to be individually addressed.
THOSE WHO MAY BENEFIT MOST:
My approach particularly favours students, such as:
> those who fall behind studies due to absence, stress, anxiety, depression, caring for others or behavioural difficulties.
> those who are bright, but want to go further into understanding the subject.
> those who are approaching a career decision and struggling to find the right path.
> those hoping to advance their career or change direction, needing help with developing new skills to achieve this.
> those that have an idea for a product or service, needing help to structure a workable plan given their specific living conditions.
> those needing help to develop their language and communication styles, creativity or effectiveness.
SUBJECTS:
In general, Mathematics and English are a key to being able to function well in life and a range of further education studies, as well as in business or, indeed, working and studying in another country in English as a second language. I am comfortable teaching and coaching people of all ages, from primary mathematics and English (including 11+) and creative writing, through GCSE Maths, English, Business Studies and English as a Foreign Language (EFL) to developing careers, business plans and achieving balance in life and work. The goal being to generate greater control of decisions, confidence in the study process and ability, leading to enhanced happiness and success.
SPECIFIC EXPERIENCE:
I have a broad personal experience as well as teacher training and experience in a wide range of settings. I have trained staff in business as business development manager/director, written and taught business English courses for international colleges and summer schools, both pre A-Level and pre-degree, as well as courses for adolescence with learning difficulties. I have taught primary level children on an individual basis in EFL and Maths throughout the UK and Rio de Janeiro. I have taught Chinese children and adults English communication, creative writing, reading and pronunciation for the last 3 years online via Skype (and Zoom – my preferred application for teaching).
To date, I have amassed many hours of experience tutoring adults in businesses and other professions throughout Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo in English, communication skills, public speaking, emailing and business course writing.
In terms of career development, I coach mostly adolescence and young adults in areas such as CV writing, job interview preparation, strengths analysis, networking, confidence building, decision making, life-work-health balance and cultural awareness.
As part of ELF tutoring, I have taught for IELTS and TOEFL exams for work abroad and University entrance. I also assist Degree and Master’s thesis students and PHD students for research papers in Engineering, Business and Psychology.

James T was employed as an English teacher of adults and children by this institution between February and May 2010. I also know James as a trainee on a CELTA course, on which I was a tutor. It was due to the positive impression he made on the course that I subsequently decided to offer him employment at our school.
At Target Language Services, James taught general English to groups of kids and adults, and he prepared students for the IELTS Exam. The adult students he taught included business people, doctors and engineers. James has a friendly and caring manner, which made him popular with colleagues and students of all ages.
James is a conscientous and organised professional, whi blends into a working environment very well. His teaching is student-centred and dynamic, and he has creative ideas for clarifying and practising language.
i have no reservations in recommending James as a teacher and professional. I thank him for his contributions to our school and wish him all the best of luck in his future career.James was employed by Bellerbys College from 15th September - 17th December 2010. (Prior to this, he worked over the summer for Embassy CES Study Group's language school). Bellerbys College is part of Study Group and is an International 6th Form College providing pre-university education to students of all nationalities. James was employed as an EFL teacher and took on the responsibilities of delivering English language preparation to students at an elementary, pre-intermediate and intermediate level. In his duties he ocvered not only the teaching of grammer for these levels but also EAP, university study skills and business language classes.
James was thorough in his approach to his work and showed an appreciation of the cultural as well as the educational needs of his students. James was reliable and punctual.I was privileged to be one of James Tijou’s tutor at the full time CELTA course, which
was run by UP Language Consultants in January, 2010. I was responsible for giving input sessions on teaching English as a foreign language, and observing and assessing James in teaching practice. I followed his progress more closely in the second half of the course.
James proved to be a committed, highly motivated and serious professional with a very good level of maturity. He was always very willing to improve and welcomed critique and suggestions, making a clear effort to adapt his teaching style to meet the course standards even more successfully. In his classes, he showed the quality of his teaching by consistently
displaying good rapport with students and using effective classroom management techniques and coherent staging. He was always very creative and planned his classes in detail.
Regarding his personal attributes, James is organized, confident and responsible. He developed good rapport with fellow trainees and trainer, and was always a positive presence
in the course.During the six-week session of the TASIS England Summer Program, James was instrumental in the success of teaching the International Business class with a Mathematics basis. James is highly professional and very knowledgeable in his field. His dedication and enthusiasm complemented by his care and interest in his students added to the great success of his class. James fulfilled his pastoral duties in the student dorms and during excursions with equal success.
His commitment, pleasant personality and positive outlook along with his above qualities resulted in two very interesting, fun and productive charity oriented activities that he lead and guided his students through as part of the course.I had the opportunity of working alongside James at the TASIS Summer School in Surrey, where he taught an introduction to International Business course to students (15 to 18). His coursework was wide ranging covering Maths, English, communication, product development, branding, public relations, and advertising. All these subjects were taught through the prism of creating a charity food and activity festival, with all the proceeds going to a children's charity.
I helped James and his students in crafting and creating the commercials that were used school wide to publicise the festival and their products. Working closely with James, I witnessed firsthand James' meticulous preparation, his passion and care towards his students, and his attitude of going way above and beyond the proverbial "extra mile."
He imparted real-world knowledge backed by tested theory in pushing his students to create their products and the festival within three weeks (the length of the course). He not only collaborated with me but also with multiple other teachers in helping his students create products that looked near professional.
While working with his students in creating the commercials, I asked how they found James' course. They shared that the course was demanding but also an amazing and invaluable experience, in which they truly learned something about how to start a business.
The course ended up being so successful that the enrolment for the second session doubled. I guess this came from the word of mouth from students, which is a testament to James' care, professionalism, and desire to impart useful knowledge to his students.View more recommendations
