About Jake
I attended Cardinal Newman School in Hove from September 2009 to June 2014. While I was there I studied English, Math, Science, RE, Geography, DT (Resistant Materials), French and BTEC Sport. Having studied at Cardinal Newman School I went on to attend Cardinal Newman Six Form College studying at A level the following subjects - IT, Media and Psychology.
Whilst at college, I took several opportunities to help out and assist younger pupils in the school years below.
During Year 12, there was an opportunity to volunteer at the college to help a pupil in a lower year group that was unfortunately blind. The girl was approaching her GCSE exams and revision in the usual way was going to be difficult due to her lack of vision. Those who chose to participate were required to record themselves reading sections of a textbook from a particular subject to form an audio revision aid. The procedure of me recording myself required a lot of time, focus and patience making sure that I pronounced every single word correctly and clearly, so that when she listened, it was easy for her to understand what I was saying. The process took me outside of my comfort zone but engaging in something new and completing the task gave me satisfaction. It was especially pleasing to have been told that I had made a difference to someone which would help them towards exam success.
In July 2015, I along with some others in my year participated in helping with the school activity week. The year group involved was Year 9 and it took place at Parkwood Campsite at Poynings. The pupils took part in a range of activities which included Assault Courses, Orienteering and Camp Craft. My role for the week was to help and supervise with the activities that were taking place. I found the role of being an assistant a challenge initially but soon found it to be enjoyable and rewarding. An example was that I had to personally lead a warm up session before the Assault Course and within a group I had to explain how to use certain pieces of equipment on the Assault Course.
During the week, I took on new responsibilities and feel I benefitted from dealing with a variety of unfamiliar situations and using my initiative. I also learnt the value of working as part of a team and I gained more skills throughout the whole week such as problem solving and constructive thinking.
The feedback I received at the end of the week was that I had been very supportive towards the pupils and had really helped to motivate them.
A personal highlight of mine was the sense of achievement that I felt as I helped individuals to overcome their own specific fears and complete the Assault Course. When they personally thanked me for my support and encouragement, not only was I proud of them but it increased my belief in my own abilities. The letter of appreciation I received from the Outdoor Education Teacher boosted my confidence and the whole experience was a positive one.
After I left college up until the end of 2016 I did a variety of temporary work through an agency, including working in the area of catering, cleaning and hospitality. From February 2017 to June 2017 I worked part time at One Stop, my nearby local convenience store.

PERSONAL INTERESTS
Whilst at Cardinal Newman School I attended a variety of after school clubs which included Tennis, Football and Badminton. Joining these clubs gave me an opportunity to meet new people throughout the school as well as learn a new sports skill. I already enjoyed playing and watching football but regularly playing football after school made me realise that I could learn a lot from playing in a team. This led me to joining an under 14’s football team that was local to me. During that time, I gained understanding of being a squad member and also extra responsibility on the occasions when I was captain. The other skills I learnt were perseverance and resilience as we didn’t always win.
Apart from being a season ticket holder for Brighton and Hove Albion I also enjoy socialising with friends, going to the cinema, playing football, going to the gym and attending music festivals. My other interests are reading and listening to music, as well as using my console and watching TV to relax.
