Language Specialist Cambridge Grad and Former Eton Teacher
I am an enthusiastic and personable tutor specialising in languages, writing skills, and school & Oxbridge admissions.
I have excellent academic credentials, having graduated with a First from Cambridge in Russian, French & Linguistics, placing in the top 3% of my year for MML (out of 190). I was awarded the college language prize, and a mark of special excellence in the Russian oral. As part of my degree I spent a year in Vladivostok where I studied Korean and taught English in my spare time.
After graduation I spent two years teaching Russian at Eton College. During this time I coached 14 boys to success in Oxbridge interviews for Russian and/or Linguistics. I was also a deputy housemaster in a boarding house of 50 students; a pastoral tutor for two groups of teenage boys; ran several school teams and publications; and organised and oversaw school trips abroad. Therefore I am used to guiding the development (both academic and beyond) or young people in a positive direction.
I left Eton to set up an educational consultancy in China which I ran for three years. I worked with some of China's most prominent families and helped their children gain admission to some of the UK's top boarding schools and universities. I designed tutorial curricula, hired and oversaw tutors, and personally prepared pupils for entrance exams, all whilst growing the business and managing a multinational team. During this time, I also learnt Chinese.
Subsequently, I moved industry and joined a top Chinese film company in Shanghai. Since coming back to the UK I have been working freelance in script development for UK production companies, and tutor in my spare time.
My approach to tutoring is focused on achieving the stated goals for the student (e.g. passing an exam) whilst also fostering a general sense of intellectual curiosity which goes beyond the confines of the curriculum. With three younger siblings aged 7-19, I get on well with kids and teens and enjoy establishing a good personal rapport with students –– whilst still maintaining the highest expectations, of course!
