About Jack

Winner of 'Best University-Level Tutor' and Runner up 'Professional Tutor of the Year' at the National Tutoring Awards 2022

Jack has been a full-time mathematics tutor since March 2018, with over 3500 hours of experience.

He completed his PhD in Mathematics at Queen Mary University of London in 2018. In 2014 he graduated from the University of Cambridge with a BA (First Class) and Masters/MMath (Distinction) in Mathematics.

Before this, whilst at Prior Pursglove College in Guisborough, North Yorkshire, he achieved 3 A*s at A Level (in Maths, Further Maths and English Language), 5 As at AS Level (in Maths, Further Maths, English Language, Fine Art and Music), as well as an A* in an EPQ (Extended Project Qualification) in Maths and Grade 1 in both STEP II and III.

An enthusiastic and diligent tutor, his mathematics specialism allows him to put curriculum topics in their broader mathematical context. Equally comfortable teaching the brightest students, for whom their classes may not move quickly enough, and students who are struggling to get their heads around core concepts, Jack relishes the challenge of ensuring that each student gets the most out of each tutorial.

As a tutor Jack has a breadth of experience tutoring students at GCSE level, A Level, all the way up to postgraduate level.

At undergraduate level he has, for example, tutored students reading subjects such as Mathematics, Economics and Biomedicine as well as a variety of joint honours degrees such as Mathematics with Management and Finance, Mathematics with Philosophy at Imperial College London, King's College London, the London School of Economics, Loughborough University, Queen Mary University of London, and the Universities of Bath, Birmingham, Bristol, Cambridge, Chicago, Durham, Oxford, St Andrews, Strathclyde, Surrey, Toronto and Warwick.

Jack has also helped students prepare for STEP exams (Mathematics exams used for entrance to Mathematics and/or Computer Science degrees at the Universities of Cambridge and Warwick among others) and MAT exams (used by Oxford, Warwick, Imperial, Durham and Bath).

Testimonials:

GCSE:

GCSE Maths (Edexcel):
"
Jack has been an extremely helpful maths tutor. Our sessions are always adapted to my needs and he is always fully prepared with exam questions always on-hand. I am grateful that Jack is always willing to spend extra time tutoring me and he is always reliable as we have been able to meet for more than 35 weeks in one year. He has given me useful tips on how to layout my calculations efficiently as well as tips on becoming more time-efficient, all of which have really helped for exams that I have had.
"

'Beyond' GCSE Maths:
"
We arranged for Jack to help tutor my son in 'going beyond' the syllabus in maths and exploring topics that were flashed by as promises of a more interesting future in GCSE maths. Though an atypical arrangement, Jack has been brilliant at reinforcing my son's love of math and helping him get habits and tools for learning for learning's sake. They manage pace and topic according to an agenda they jointly set. Jack is helpful in his use of on-line tools which leaves a helpful record to go back on and review. From my perspective, Jack has been very easy to work with; he is prompt in correspondence, dependable and punctual in sessions and flexible in the cases where we might need that. In sum, I highly recommend Jack.
"

A Level:

A Level Maths (Edexcel)
“Jack has been tutoring both my son and daughter over the last 2 years. He has been flexible enough to coach my son successfully through A level maths and my daughter continues to rely on his help for the differing demands of the IB diploma. He has been totally reliable and professional and moreover, his patient approach to teaching has brought the best out of both my children. A key part of problem solving for my son in particular, was a lack of self belief and having Jack go through the issues and set examples for homework has been the solution to restoring his confidence in the subject. The A grade he attained came from a lot of hard work and a good deal of guidance, for which Jack played a major role.”

A Level Maths (Edexcel Linear):
"
Jack has been a great tutor for helping me with A Level maths. He provided me with lots of key points/tips on how to tackle difficult questions which helped me very much in exams. Thank you Jack for helping me to obtain an excellent grade in my A Level studies.
"

A Level Further Maths (CIE) -- Mechanics and Statistics:
"
My son waited until the last minute to find a tutor the week of his final exam. His original tutor was on vacation so we were in a bind. After losing a lot of time trying to find a replacement tutor, I found [agency name omitted]. They stepped in and found my son an even better tutor that his original one. The tutor even sent a best wishes email. He is not absolutely sure he got an A*, but his chances improved dramatically with his tutor. [Agency name omitted] were a bit more expensive than my original tutor, but they are more than worth it. Altogether, [agency name omitted] made a stressful time manageable and efficient.
"

A Level Further Maths (CIE) -- Mechanics and Statistics:
"
I like that he prepared an entire past paper before the lesson - on just a few hours notice. I am grateful that he agreed to spend 2 hours per day with me in the evenings in the run up to my exam. He gave advice on not just how to solve the question, but on how to write my answers. He knew a lot of shortcuts. He is pleasant to work with on tricky problems.
"

STEP:

Oliver, STEP 2 and 3:
“Our son was preparing for Maths STEP exams and was tutored by Jack. Jack has been excellent, he is very knowledgeable as you would expect, and he made each session enjoyable as well as challenging. Jack is also committed to his students and is very kind and thoughtful. Our son achieved the place at Cambridge that he wanted and will be continuing to work with Jack on his undergraduate studies. We would thoroughly recommend Jack.”

Went on to study Mathematics at the University of Cambridge beginning in the academic year 2021/2022.

Ali, STEP 2 and 3:
“From year 12, Jack has been supporting me in not only my STEP prep but a lot more in general. He has always answered any questions with respect to university, colleges, tips for interviews and has always been a great source of mentorship and help.

At the start of my journey, I would look at a STEP problem (particularly 2/3) and be absolutely confused on where to begin, how to take on the ideas in the question and apply it and doubted my ability in ever tackling such an exam. Eventually, I slowly started practising and working at it - with the help of Jack, this was a lot, lot more efficient and enjoyable. No maths student enjoys the state of being confused but with Jack helping, we would go over any questions that I would be stuck at and complete it to a satisfactory amount of understanding and not only that but also, he would give me tips for similar questions and teach me concepts and tricks that could be helpful in similar situations. This was immensely helpful. I remember a STEP Statistics problem that was sent in and not only did he answer any doubts I had, he taught me the idea of order statistics which helped me gain an intuition so useful, it made a lot of STEP statistics problems extremely accessible and easy to solve within a very short time.

Moreover, apart from just teaching mathematics, Jack has asked, on multiple times, to observe my proof writing skills (and by extension, our write-ups). This was very useful as he helped point out many conceptual mistakes I had about write-ups, which came useful for the final examination as I avoided losing many marks on my written solutions, so I am very grateful for even these relatively minuscule details that Jack helps with.

Furthermore, Jack has been extremely professional - he has always been punctual (much more than I have been!) and was always checking in on us with respect to how we're feeling about STEP, how many questions we've tried (this was very useful as a lot of the time, I was a bit lazy and so this forced me to study harder) and whether we had any doubts about particular questions and/or topics. Hearing his explanations on vectors, complex geometry, 3D geometry, statistics etc. has made me a lot more confident in my maths ability and has made a lot more STEP questions a realistic selection for me.

His tutoring has improved my maths ability by a substantial amount and has made me more confident in a greater range of topics and this will be very helpful for the future!
I achieved 1,1 in STEP 2/3 thanks to Jack and will be reading Mathematics at the University of Cambridge later this year.”

Achieved grade 1 in STEP 2 and 3 and went on to study Mathematics at the University of Cambridge beginning in the academic year 2020/2021.

STEP 2 and 3:
“I would highly recommend Jack he's very supportive and encouraging and made sure that I was never afraid to tell him if I didn't understand something he was explaining. He was always punctual and professional but still friendly and would email me after exams or when I got my results to ask how it went. His tutoring has greatly improved my confidence in my mathematical ability, which is serving me well now that I'm at university.”

STEP 2 and 3:
“Jack has been an exceptional tutor and has prepared me well for the STEP exams. Every time I was stuck on a question, he would always listen to my approach and either explain why it fails or alternatively, explain how to modify my argument such that it works. He would also show me alternative solutions where possible, equipping me with a larger arsenal of tools for tackling new STEP questions. Whenever there was a new concept or trick I needed for a question, Jack would always explain the intuition behind it and apply it to other questions so that I could get accustomed to it - ultimately aiding me to solve similar STEP questions. In the end, he would give useful advice about facing the exams and he was extremely motivational and supportive. With the help of Jack, I met my offer and will be studying Mathematics at Cambridge.”

Met their offer to study Mathematics at the University of Cambridge commencing in the academic year 2020/2021.

STEP I and II:
"
Our daughter's tutor, Jack, has been kind, expert, and professional in the help he has been giving her. When we have asked for feedback on her progress he has given a comprehensive review of how she is doing in preparing for the STEP maths papers.
Furthermore, the response from the company when we went to them for help was swift and friendly. I have no hesitation in recommending [agency name omitted].

"An honest review of my prof: Jack [Surname]"
"
At the beginning i was so lost when it came to STEP but when i had Jack as my Prof not only did he improve my abilities to tackle these questions that were not only difficult but obscure to me, he instilled confidence in me. Within the first week I already felt comfortable talking with him and was able to adopt a system where we could focus mainly on the questions i would struggle with, as i would send him the questions ahead of the consultation. This system helped us see where my approach went wrong and what i could've done better. The advice exchanged would not just help me on that question, but on many others. Even minuscule details such as the arrangement of my work helped me so much in the grand scheme. If i could add an extra star in the rating i would as not only did i get into my dream university, but feel much better with my capabilities in mathematics because of Jack.

Trustpilot, 7 Oct 2021, 5 stars, "Jack [surname] undergraduate maths tutor"

Jack has been one of the best tutors I have ever had! I needed a bit of extra help for my last year as an undergraduate. I struggled immensely in linear algebra and had scraped passes in previous years, as I was in my last year I wanted to get a better grade so I could get a good grade overall. Jack was so helpful in going through the basics of the course so I could then understand the harder parts. He was also extremely helpful in guiding me on how I should structure my exam answers. Zoom lessons were always punctual and he is super easy to get into contact with. His use of online note taking was also extremely useful in visualising the topics and having access to them made was great as you could go over it as many times as you liked. Highly recommended!!

Mathematics with Management and Finance, King's College London
Trustpilot, 4 Oct 2021, 5 stars, "Jack [surname] - Undergraduate Mathematics Tuition"

I started tuition with Jack during my second year of undergraduate studies in mathematics and he has tutored me up until the completion of my degree. We have had both weekly sessions at the beginning of term as well as more frequent sessions closer to the exam periods when I was going through a difficult time in my life; in either scenario he demonstrated his exceptional ability at teaching complex mathematical concepts and proved to be of unbelievable value throughout the course of my degree.

I genuinely believe Jack has had a huge impact in my mathematical understanding and his experience through exam preparation played a significant role in my 1st class degree classification.
Although he did help me achieve well over 70% average in my 2nd year exams, what really impressed me about Jack was his help during the ‘final stretch’ of my 3rd year exams while I was going through a difficult period of my life.

Only a few months before my 3rd year final exams (5 mathematics exams in total, one of which he’d never covered before) I contacted Jack for help. I was completely lost, scared, and convinced I would not be able to do well, let alone pass, any of these 5 exams. As soon as I got in touch, Jack wasted no time to plan the exam preparation meticulously and went beyond my expectations to give me both personal advice as well as take the time after our sessions to encourage me and make sure I felt better with preparation every day.

He has been particularly patient and kept a very positive attitude throughout the ‘difficult’ first sessions where my understanding of the relevant topics was extremely limited and even when I thought merely passing the exams would be an impossible task. For this I am truly grateful and although I doubt someone as kind as him will ever admit it, I’m sure some other tutor would have probably turned me down as my mood and attitude were not easy to work with (to say the least.)

Furthermore, as my confidence and preparation were increasing, he gave me the right balance of encouragement and challenging material to cover and even started giving me strategic exam preparation advice (often even after hours) to help ease any exam-related stress. It has been extremely pleasant to work with him throughout this phase as I felt the value from the sessions had been growing. Jack also proved to be of immense value even days before the exams when, after many hours of preparation with him, I felt very confident in my abilities to do well as he still managed to teach me new methods/perspectives/concepts that he knew I could assimilate in no time.

As such, I would recommend Jack for undergraduate mathematics students that are either completely lost, need just some help, or are just sharpening their skills before exams as he has proved to add immense value and expertise at all stages of understanding of pure/applied maths modules. He has been an absolute pleasure to work with, is always on time for sessions and is very flexible with student demands. I could not have asked for a more accommodating, kind, and helpful tutor in Jack and would also like to thank Josh from The Profs for finding the perfect match for me.

Jack has been helping me with probability an area he is very knowledgeable in. The sessions are well prepared and executed.

I'm very happy with the tutorial sessions.

Second year Mathematics Undergraduate, King's College London

Jack has been an exceptional tutor and overall person to work with.

I started with him in early April very scared about the exams I had to take in May.

Since then we have worked on a total of 4 topics: Analysis, Calculus II, Probability & Statistics II, Partial Differential Equations. In just a question of weeks my confidence skyrocketed and I have been very impressed with Jack as he was always able to find alternative ways to explain difficult topics. He has been very flexible with me and always patient whenever I wouldn't understand some concept even after having explained it multiple times.

Other than working on the material provided by my lecturers for exam preparation, he would often go out of his way to explain interesting concepts from out-of-course material which just motivated me to do better in these exams.

I would definitely recommend Jack to anyone studying mathematics as it is delightful to work with him in times of revision and I am sure it would also be amazing to work with him throughout the year.

Third year Mathematics Undergraduate, King's College London
Trustpilot, 28 Nov 2019, 5 stars, "Jack [surname] - An Excellent Tutor"

Jack Bartley is an amazing tutor, and the best I have had for Maths. I have been with Jack for just over a year and have spent many hours with him, in which he has tutored me in degree level Maths.

In particular Jack is excellent in approaching concepts from different angles to ensure that a difficult concept is easy to digest. Jack can teach a wide variety of mathematical concepts at an in-depth level and is able to link different concepts together to paint a full picture. It is easy to communicate with Jack and ask repeated questions in order to understand a topic that I may have a mental block on, and in each instance Jack may approach the topic in a different angle to insure that I have fully understood the topic.

The sessions are also run professionally and Jack is always punctual to the sessions. Further to this, the quality of the equipment, such as a high quality microphone and a graphics tablet, used is superb, making the online sessions outstanding as a result.

Communication outside sessions is easy and all emails are replied to within a timely manner.

I would definitely recommend Jack to anyone looking for a Maths tutor for any educational level.

Studying Engineering we often focus on the application of maths and so I find pure mathematics a little harder to grasp. The Profs got me in touch with a mathematics tutor who was perfect for explaining the pure maths concepts to me. I found my tutor very easy to understand and very approachable when I didn't understand things first time- he was always patient and willing to go over things multiple times. My tutoring has been a great help and hugely increased my confidence in maths- thank you!

Case studies and examples of recent tuition:
==============================================================

GCSE Mathematics (100+ hours):
Through a London based charity Jack provided weekly voluntary GCSE maths tuition to a student who subsequently achieved a grade 8 in their maths GCSE and went on to study at a prestigious East London school.

A Level Statistics module (35 hours):
Having been unwell during the time that the statistics module was taught as part of their accelerated A Level program, Jack had the opportunity to teach this student their statistics module from scratch, and work with them through a number of past papers. This student went on to obtain 100 UMS in their exam.

STEP I and II (14 hours):
Having received an offer to study at a prestigious London University, Jack assisted the student in preparing for their STEP exams. Although a very bright and engaged student, they had been having considerable difficulty adjusting to the style and difficulty of STEP questions. After just 7 sessions over 8 weeks, the student was well prepared to sit their exams and went on to meet their offer and take their place at university.

Mathematics undergraduate (56 hours):
Jack had the opportunity to work with a very bright mathematics undergraduate whose studies had been obstructed for reasons outside of their control. In just two months this student was able to turn things around and went on to perform very well, averaging 80% in their exams.

Mathematics for Economics undergraduate degree (12.75 hours):
Jack first met with this student on a Thursday evening, having been introduced earlier that day, in order to help prepare them for an exam the coming Monday. Having initially had some non-trivial difficulties with some of the techniques essential to the module, after just four sessions the student went on to obtain a mark of 73% in their exam.

Mathematics for Economics joint honours student (46 hours):
Having fallen behind during the year, this student worked through the lectures, problem sheets and past exams together with Jack and went on to achieve a grade of 83% in the final exam.

Mathematics undergraduate degree finalist (24 hours):
In this instance Jack was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to assist a student in their preparation for their finals. Specifically, he worked with the student on Galois Theory and Number Theory, with the student ultimately obtaining an average of over 65% in these two modules and a 2i overall.
