About Isabelle

I have over 800 hours of tutoring and teaching experience, having worked with 20 students from year 3 to A - level. I have provided Maths tutoring to 15 students. This included 8 students studying for Mathematics University entrance, of whom 2 secured a place at Oxford or Cambridge.

In 2021, I completed a month - long teaching internship, where I delivered lessons and supported classes while being supervised by fully qualified teachers. This experience gave me valuable feedback on my teaching style that helped me develop my session delivery and planning to maximize my students' experiences.

I graduated with a 2.1 Masters degree in Mathematics in the summer of 2023, and I have A*/A/B A - levels in Maths, Physics and Further Maths respectively. I also have STEP 2 and 3 at Grade 3 (Cambridge Mathematics Entrance Papers).

I have an enhanced DBS check.

My tutoring style is practice based, as I feel the best way to achieve results with Mathematics is through practical experience with solving similar questions. With younger students, this is achieved partially through a range of relevant Maths games, while for older students the use of past papers can help acclimatise the student to the style of question and help them feel more confident in high pressure situations.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I'd always been interested in Maths but that interest really took off around GCSE level. Around that time I also started tutoring through a mentorship scheme set up at school, and I found that I really enjoyed it. I got more into tutoring around January 2020, and found I was able to help students and their families stay connected to their educations over lockdown. Since then, I have worked with 11 different pupils and provided over 50 hours of tutoring sessions!
  • Tell us more about the subjects you teach - what are your favourite areas to discuss with students?

A favourite area of mine to discuss with students is Cryptography, as Simon Singh's 'The Code Book' inspired a genuine love of the evolution of Cryptography. For example, did you know that cryptography is partially responsible for Queen Elizabeth's execution of Mary Queen of Scots? In fact, I found his book so interesting that I based my university personal statement on it! If you've never read it, it can be a little difficult to digest, but if you take it slowly and read a little bit at a time it's definitely worth it!
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

I think that the most important quality when tutoring is patience. Being patient keeps the sessions relaxed for both the student and the tutor, and creates an environment in which the student feels comfortable learning and exploring gaps in their knowledge. This makes the whole experience more enjoyable for everyone involved, plus it's much easier for a student to learn if they know they don't need to worry if they make a mistake!
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching or something completely different?

I'd say that a key passion of mine is learning. Whether it's academic learning, watching science or nature documentaries, or teaching myself creative skills, I love giving my brain a challenge! I think my own love of learning is probably part of the reason why I find helping other people learn to be such a rewarding experience.
  • Any last advice?

I'm very aware that although Maths can be an extremely enjoyable subject, there are still lots and lots of students who dislike it or struggle with it. Importantly though, I also believe that with the right support anyone can improve their Mathematical confidence and skill. My advice to any student would be to keep going, and to keep looking for help until you find the right support for you.
