About Isaac
Hi, I’m a graduate of Cambridge University with a 2:1 degree in English, who has coached successful English and History UCAS applicants to Russell Group universities including Oxford and Cambridge. I have over 7 years experience in education and have recently returned to private tutoring, with a student focus spanning early years and 11+ and scholarships through to GCSE, A-Levels and university admissions. My specialism and passion is English, and I work to build skills of literary comprehension, verbal and written reasoning, textual analysis and essay and exam technique in my students. I also tutor in history, drama and politics, subjects of significant interest to me personally, which demand very similar written and analytical skills.
I recently returned to tutoring after a two-year break, having previously tutored KS3, GCSE and A-Level English and History students across exam boards OCR, AQA and Edexcel. I have also worked in depth on UCAS applications, providing guidance on personal statements, coaching and preparing students for interviews and entrance examinations.
Previously I worked for two years running the sixth-form education programme at the Institute of Art and Ideas and their flagship festival of ideas, HowTheLightGetsIn. Here I organised and ran courses on philosophy, politics, literature and the arts in partnership with leading academics from universities including Oxford, Durham, KCL and Harvard. Students in attendance came both from leading independent schools such as Dulwich College and St Paul's as well as low-income and underprivileged backgrounds. Prior to this my experience includes five years’ work at an education charity, working to make the national curriculum accessible for children aged 4-11 in an outdoor environment. This was done alongside voluntary work at primary and secondary schools, running literature, history and drama workshops.
Tutoring always works best when the tutor and the tutee really enjoy working together to pinpoint skills and areas of study which could benefit from development. In addition to developing key marking areas I aim to grow a student’s drive and motivation to improve and build a common rapport and shared understanding of their strengths and weaknesses. For a student to continually grow their capabilities and achieve the best results academically, it's very important that the sessions are framed in a way which works well for them and contributes to their overall enjoyment of a subject, by making sessions engaging and fun as well as instructive! I am delighted when a student develops interests in a subject which extends beyond their work at school and am always willing to provide extra material and tuition which will bring greater depth to their knowledge and understanding of the subject.
I always offer a free 30 minute consultation before taking on a new tutee so that we can discuss key areas of improvement, and the long-term goals of the student. I am currently available for online sessions, as well as being happy to transition to face-to-face sessions once lockdown has been lifted.
I hold an up to date Enhanced DBS check as well as Level 2 Child Safeguarding.
