Find out more about Imad

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

My tutoring experience and interest began when I was an A-level student. I volunteered as a mathematics classroom assistant at my school.

It gave me the opportunity to work with younger less able students.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I tutor Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Biology up to GCSE level. I tutor Maths, Further Maths and Physics at A level and IB level. Tutoring Maths and Science allows me the opportunity to discuss a variety of real-life applications of the topics we cover in the syllabus with my students. For example, the recent COVID pandemic allowed me to refer to the GCSE Biology topics regarding vaccinations and communicable diseases with my students.

Students always respond positively when you can link an academic topic to a real-world problem, especially if that real-world problem is something they are familiar with. Physics and Maths provide fertile ground for this.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

My role model was my father. He was an outstanding Physics lecturer and teacher.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

A passion for your subject, patience, excellent communication skills, a thorough understanding of the subject syllabus and empathy are qualities required to be a good tutor.

Each lesson should be tailored to the individual needs of the student. A good tutor will be able to quickly identify their strengths and weaknesses.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

At GCSE level my father attended my parents evening and was told by the maths teacher, that I was predicted to get a grade B in Maths, rather than the top grade A. My father disagreed. He believed I was a grade-A student. In the weeks leading up to the exam, he spent an hour with me every morning (6 am) tutoring me in Maths before leaving for work. As a result, I got the top grade A in Maths.
I experienced first-hand the benefit of one-to-one tutoring from a passionate and inspirational teacher, who believed in my ability.

Looking back, I believe that this was the catalyst for everything I achieved academically going forward. As a result, I was awarded a First Class Honours Bachelor's degree and a Master's degree in Engineering. I will be forever grateful to my father for believing in me.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

I think the main challenge I experienced, was when the new GCSE and A-level exams were introduced a few years ago. The revision resources (e.g. past papers) were scarce for that first year.

I use past papers extensively to prepare my students for exams.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

My passion is education. However, outside of tutoring, my passion is music (I play the guitar) and tennis.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P)?

My approach to tutoring is to consider every student as an individual and to make learning fun. I have a passion for the subjects that I teach and I try to enthuse my students too. A happy student is a more productive student and I endeavour to make my tutoring sessions a highlight of their week, rather than a chore.

I believe everyone should be given the opportunity to reach their full academic potential. I want to see my students succeed.
