University and career guidance for a fulfilling profession

I support students to choose: GCSE, A-level and University subjects; work experience; and entry level jobs that will lead them towards a fulfilling profession. I help both to select universities and with the application process including personal statements. Once we define your goals I can help with exam and essay technique to give you the best chance of achieving those goals!

Exam success is 50% subject knowledge and 50% exam technique. I have coached many students who don't understand how they can know the syllabus so well and yet not get the results they want, often this is due to a lack of exam technique. I teach exam technique in all core subjects. I also support my students to create revision plans that are both realistic and provide results. I share tips for revision using my knowledge of pedagogy and help explain to students how they actually learn! I am available to coach day time during the week as well as evenings which is great during exam season. I coach in person, via skype and I can also coach residentially if you need me for a few days.

Why do I coach?
A good education creates opportunities, it gives you the flexibility to choose what you want to do, it empowers you to take control of your own life. This is why I believe so strongly in the power of education and why I love coaching students. I appreciate that exams are a necessary stepping stone, and I have tutored various students specifically on exam technique, but I don’t only want to improve scores. For me, tutoring is about engaging the natural curiosity that every student has and in doing so unlocking their potential; over time I have found I deliver the highest quality support when coaching rather than focusing solely on academic tutoring. I love being able to explore in detail the questions that my students pose. I also believe strongly in the mentoring role that a tutor plays; I regularly find that my students benefit from the time and stress management techniques that I give them.

I have been tutoring part-time since 2010 both during my undergraduate and my postgraduate degrees, covering all core subjects, from 11+ to GCSE level. Having finished a teaching qualification (PGCE) I have decided not to work as a full-time teacher but rather as a coach and tutor, giving me the opportunity to give my students the much needed 1 to 1 attention I believe we all require. I have nearly finished 2 years of coaching training and also work as a public speaker in schools, speaking about mental health.

Brilliant young woman

Not only is she a brilliant young woman, but she is capable to adjust to a 13 year old who does not like academics, and who would rather play than concentrate on physics or geography. Ilona is an exceptional woman, she was a "gifted" child, verbally eloquent who understands the power of sharing knowledge in creative ways. They sat and studied, they went in the garden, to the museum, used colors, books, papers of all sorts. She has strong ethics, discipline, punctuality, and care. She tutored for CE, and IB. Email me if you want more details.

A True Professional

Ilona has a very easy open manner enabling her to establish excellent rapport with her students. The result is that she can identify where the extra teaching needs to be focused very quickly. Working closely with the student she handles each learning curve in a systematic way and in my experience delivers great results in a short space of time. Overall she is professional, knowledgeable and reliable and she made the difference in helping my son get the best possible grades he can.

Excellent tutor

Ilona is a very good teacher who relates well with her pupils. She helped to prepare my son for his assessment at a selective london prep. She taught him maths, English, handwriting and helped instill in him the required level of classroom discipline. She also helped with his level of focus - this was a major issue as my son found it very hard to concentrate on the same task for long periods at a time. Thanks to the support provide by llona, my don got into our school of choice.
Outcome:
Ilona is an excellent teacher and I have no hesitation in recommending her.

Recommendation for Ilona

Ilona tutored twin students from the Middle East, for a period of several years whilst they studied for their GCSE's, then International Baccalaureate (IB) and Cambridge Pre U. This was done in the UK during term time and the Middle East during school vacations. Ilona quickly established a good working relationship with her students and created an environment in which they found it easy to discuss areas of concern. This rapidly increased their level of confidence in the subject.
She spent considerable time with them, identifying areas of weakness in their understanding and building knowledge in those areas. She also provided excellent guidance on exam technique.
As the final examinations approached, Ilona demonstrated a high level of commitment to the students and great flexibility in finding time within her busy schedule to fit in extra tutoring sessions. This ensured that the students entered their examinations feeling very well prepared and confident.
I have no hesitation in recommending Ilona as a tutor.

A great tutor and a lovely person.

Ilona is currently tutoring my 2 nieces aged 15 yrs and 9 yrs. The eldest one will be taking her GCSE's next year and is receiving help with her maths and English. The youngest one is mostly receiving help with numeracy.
Both girls have needed this extra support as their mum passed away 18 months ago and so their schooling has subsequently suffered.
Ilona visits once a week and has been able to seamlessly manage both of their ages and needs. They thoroughly enjoy working with her, there are no groans on Tuesday evenings and both are eager for her arrival.
My youngest niece said, 'I think my brain is being unlocked.'
You can't ask for more than that can you? Great stuff!
Outcome:
A huge confidence burst for 2 girls who have been struggling with their schoolwork. Hoping that good GCSE results in the summer will enable my niece to go to the college of her choice.

Very Highly recommended

Ilona has been an invaluable help to an anxious 15 year old with confidence problems. She has been preparing her for GCSE science and also she has occasionally helped with Maths.

She knows her stuff is kind, has a warm, open manner and is very empathetic. She quickly gained my daughter's trust and has helped stop her being overwhelmed by fear of exams she is very capable of doing well in; but needed reassurance and the help to believe that she could succeed.

The results are not in yet, and although I am confident all will be fine, pass or fail Ilona's patient, firm but calm manner have made a very stressful time much easier for all.

Great 11+ experience

Ilona prepared my daughter for her 11+ maths entrance exams. Maths is her favourite subject but she had received no preparation at all for the exams from her (state) primary school. In just a term Ilona covered all the main bases and introduced her to exam strategies that really boosted her confidence. Aside from the great outcome it was a pleasure having Ilona help us - she was consistently well prepared, focussed, patient and fun, and my daughter absolutely loved the lessons with her.

Excellent tutor-highly recommended

Ilona has helped my 11 year old son immensely with his maths since she started tutoring him a few weeks ago. She is very empathetic and has built his confidence and belief in himself in just a few sessions already. She is always curtious and punctual, and is extremely knowledgable in many subjects. I would highly recommend Ilona for any child that is struggling at school and needs someone to bring the best out of them. My son always looks forward to being taught by Ilona. Thank you Ilona and Tutorfair!

Yr 9 maths catch-up and general numeracy

I embarked on maths tutoring for my 13-year-old daughter because she has struggled with numeracy since primary school, was falling further behind in class and lacked confidence to the point where she considered herself 'useless' at numbers. She'd previously received extra help in maths from her school but always in a group setting which hadn't proved particularly helpful. I hoped Ilona could boost her confidence and bring her numeracy up to speed so she had a good chance of achieving at least a grade C in maths GCSE. Within six months of being tutored by Ilona, my daughter has already improved beyond my expectations. Not only has her attainment increased markedly she actively enjoys maths now - and looks forward to her sessions with Ilona. She reports that she is often ahead of her classmates at school in maths, and that she finds it easier to work out maths problems. Ilona has used some innovative approaches, such as colour coding, which seem to have really helped her understanding. On a personal level, Ilona is punctual, courteous and a pleasure to have around. I highly recommend her as a tutor.

Super nice, smart and reliable Tutor who helps you achieve the best in you!

For everyone who is struggling with their personal Statement and who needs help with their choices, Ilona is the perfect Tutor. When I applied for Universities in the U.K last year, I was hardly struggling with my personal Statement. I only had about 2 weeks before my application was due and I was sitting there with uncertainty about my choices and couldn't put my words on the paper for my personal statement. This was when I contacted Ilona, who provided me with such detailed information about plenty Universities out of her head during our first session which made it really easy for me to decide which Uni's I preferred. Since I am going to school in Canada, we had our sessions via skype which worked really well because Ilona was able to answer all my questions on such short notice. We then started to work on my personal Statement, she gave me in depth detailed comments/tips which made it incredibly easy for me to structure my statement and say what I really wanted to say. Ilona puts all her attention towards you when she works with you and supports with plenty of well-structured information that she creates based on your personal interests. All in all, I couldn't have asked for a nicer, smarter and fun to work with tutor during my application process.
